saw this on techb@rgains, some place called called getvcds is selling crouching tiger dvd (all regions) for $15.99 + 8.99 shipping. does anyone know anything about this site. Is this a bootlegged copy. I just ordered mine and will give feedback when it arrives. here's the link http://www.getvcds.com/dvd/dvdhiddendragon.shtml

The question is not wheather it is a bootleg copy, the question is why would you want to waste your money on a piece of crap that was hidden tiger crouching dragon

thanks for your review of the movie, however, i was asking for a review of the website, not the movie.

...is, why are you crapping on this guy's legitimate thread with such an inane opinion that no one really cares to hear from your crotch mouth?

If you've nothing constructive to post, just _move on_. There _are_ other people BESIDES you that really enjoyed the movie. The flaming gay fairy flying scenes INCLUDED.

Here's a BUMP for you, Newguy. Do let us know the DVD's quality and its region assignment. I'm interested in buying if it'll play on my Region 1 Panasonic DVD.

Thanx.

Most of the bootleg copies don't have any of the special features that this one has. I know they have an officially licensed released DVD in Malaysia that I've seen being sold on ebay.

Anyways although i think the movie was crappy i have the following to say, I am very positive that this DVD is a bootleg... because the site seems kind of off if you know what i mean, starting with the choppy english.

Sorry for the offense

What about the movie did you not like? Everyone else I know absolutely loved this movie. It was like Titanic meets Matrix.

Just to clarify something. It might show lots of special features, but it still doesn't mean its real. My friend gets DVDs from Hong Kong all the time, and they all have special features listed on the back. None of them except the copies of officially released DVDs have special features. Further more, most of the copies of official releases have desynced audio. The ones that don't have special features or anything, and are out before or during the movie's theatrical run are usually recorded straight out of the theater with a hand cam. And since there is a high possibility that this is a HK bootleg(since it IS a HK movie), theres also a high chance that it was recorded with a handcam and doesn't have special features.

I can scan the back of one of my friends DVDs to show the 'special feature' listing that is nonexistant, if anyone wants me to.

I have not looked at the site yet, but you guys are all aware that this movie came out in Asia a while before it came to the states, right? So if that is the case, then why wouldn't it be possible that it might have been released in Asia before it was here on DVD? Maybe that is why the site has "choppy English" and might be an indication of the $8 something shipping charge (though I have never purchased anything from anywhere outside of the US before so I am not sure what kind of S&H rates they charge). I think it is a toss up personally, whether you are willing to take the chance of it being a true DVD or a copied one. Very true that there are a lot of fakes and copies all over Asia. I also know that the releases from Asia that I have seen (be it a copy of the actual footage from a hand cam of the theater screen, or a release) have the subtitles on the bottom of the actual picture, not in a black field under the picture like it was in the theaters here in the states. It gets pretty hard to read unless you speak fluent and very formal Mandarin Chinese.

well, I had the image on my webspace at http://members.home.net/bravo1540/bob.jpg (the monkey is actually named bob and he live on my dash board in my car). Then I used UBB code. I am gonna have to put spaces in the code so that you can see it, but if you wanna use the code, just take out the spaces:

now just take out all of the spaces of the above code, and it will show the picture of the link.

I just received my copy today after reading the review on ign.com last week. It played fine on my dvd player fine, I just had to press stop and then play again before it would work (this was mentioned on the website). The picture quality is outstanding, just like most newly released dvd's. Another feature I like is that there is an option for both english subtitles and english language. I listened to the english language version and it was done extremely well. Not at all like a bad Jackie Chan film. I was suspicious about the website at first too, but everything turned out ok.

I recently ordered this dvd form getvcds.com.

They FedExed it to me in two days for $8.99. No problems what-so-ever. I also ordered the Star Wars triology on VCD. It was the first VCD to have the THX stamp of approval. I have watched it at work (no dvd player). It is pretty darn good quality also.

Back to CTHD, the dvd is 100% legit. It does have all the features that are listed on the box. Once inside the menu, it has one feature that was taken out (interview with Ang Lee). The menu will just pass over it.

Besides that, it is pretty cool to have a dvd of a movie that is in the top 5 over here.

It was my first purchase overseas and I must say getvcds.com did a great job.

They bill your credit card under CCNow.com, I believe.

Highly recommended. 2 thumbs up!!!

Don't know if this is still helpful but I know they are releasing the official DVD in asia already. They were on sale over Christmas in Blockbusters.. the movie went up during the summer. well, but it is also true that some of the countries are infamous for their fake copies.

Never mind, I just caved and ordered it. I loved that freaking movie and can't wait to see it again. I saw it opening nite when it was only in 31 theaters in US and Canada, and I bailed on a bunch of friends who refused to read subtitles (they saw What women want) and they got so mad that one barely said a nice word to me for almost a week, and she said I was mostly bad. Oh well, it was worth it.

Just to let you know most of the Chinese films that make it in the US have been released in Asia... like for those of you who actually thought Rumble in the Bronze was new when it hit the US market... sorry. Twin Dragons... I had that on tape long before it was on US Screens. So it is possible that Hidden Dragon was released in Asia way before it was released here. Just a side note ok

Woohoo...first post now that I'm registered.

I've ordered from getvcds.com like 4 times. They have very fast delivery considering the invoice says it was delivered from Malaysia. Most of the VCDs look legit. I've gotten some where they are obviously pirated and roll my eyes and chalk it up to experience.

None of the VCDs look like they came from some guy holding a camcorder but I've had a few where the subtitles are hacked off on both sides.

The CTHD VCD isn't too bad. Clear enough.

Just a clarification on MCS328's post...

CTHD is not a VCD, it is a DVD. It does have AC-3 (Dolby Digital) surround sound. Excellent quality and sound. Very, very good english dub over, or you can watch it with english subtitles.

2 thumbs up.

I actually do have a VCD of CTHD. Not from getvcds.com though. I doubt it's from the American release because it's not letterbox/widescreen and the subtitles actually all fit because they use two lines to fit in the dialogue.

I saw the movie and the subtitles go all across the bottom. I had a bad seat...3rd row from the front. My goodness my neck hurt.

I have an Apex 703 player BTW. =)

can you believe this...this is region 3 release, but it is actually region free. Then, why the hell did they put a region 3 restriction on Godzilla 2000, WTF? This is what I called a hell of a deal for $25-DVD-quality-not-yet-release-in-where-I-live DVD. Hell, after receiving a copy, I watch four more times (I also have the official VCD)in English, Mandarin w/ English Sub, Cantonese w/ Thai sub, and Thai. One thing I don't get is they never actually made a dub in Malay. All I have to say that this is a hell of a deal because the same DVD was first sold on yesasia for about $35, and the restriction that held many people back was region 3 restriction. My question is did anyone bought from yesasia and does your copy only play with region 3 player. If the other version of this release exist, then I guess the version sold at getvcds is a hack-pirated copy. The quality of the cover is highly questionable...

Okay, quick thing here....

Why are you guys so cheap and just not buy the Region 3 DVD? If you guys know anything about SPE Asia, the only official releases are regionized. For those who travel to HK, MY, TH, and TW, you guys know that they're all pirated copies, and they cost 1 buck in china, 5 bucks in HK, 2-3 dollars in MY/TH. (approx. price last time I've been to those places, which was in december)

Also..If you guys are paying so much already, why not just get the original?

But then again, so many people these days just copy their dreamcast games, copy their PSX/PS2 games, DiVX movies, copy anime, etc....

I don't get what you're talking about. Are you suggesting that instead of bying this DVD, we should wait 5 months (or however long) and buy the USA offical version?

psycho- it's pointless. I figure most of the people who are into deal probably have a region free or selectable player (I do). my question was that if this one that sold @ getvcds actually hacked to be regionfree. Nothing significant, just curious.

I got it yesterday and FWIW, it plays with great difficulty on my KLH221. I have to continually hit the > before it will play. Once it starts however, it's BEAUTIFUL. And no, this is the ONLY DVD I've had this peoblem with.
I've emailed Ping. We'll see what happens.
Oh by the way, on the manifest, the declared value was $3.50 US. Bootleg? Ummmm, maybe.

I have don't have a region selectable DVD player. Will this movie still play, even though I might have to hit play a couple of times?

Cool, I can't wait until the original version comes out. I think they would make a lot more money if they had the DVD ready at the time of the movie release, no matter how difficult a process it may be.

what you say!?!

mine looks like the "original" version

Ooops, my bad - I meant to say "The original US version release", not the oversea, kinda works if I hit play a lot, version :)

just so you know, jdogg, you only gotta hit play twice at most

Thanks m0j0. I didn't think it would be that much of a problem. And anyway, it's still awesome to have the movie when it's still in theaters!

I have the DVD of this movie, except it is not on a DVD and the quality isn't as good as a DVD, but pretty close. :naughty:

Still a great deal on my opinion. I have the Samsung player that came free when you signed up for Ikena, and I don't have to hit play to start it. Although I still have problems with the trailer and the scene over the lake. Off topic: Does anyone know if I have to buy a dvd player with dual lasers to read cdr music?

Well I finally ordered my copy! I held out for a decent amount of time, but the peer pressure was just too much.

yes, my roommate bought the region 3 version from yesasia. and yes, it only plays on a player that can play region 3 dvds. however, every single feature (including the trailer) work as they are suppose to. it is the real legit copy from sony, complete w/ high qualty box cover and insert. so the answer is yes.. the getvcds region free one is a hacked/pirated copy, but i think that was already established at the begining.. as no legit dvds would be region free. the point of having regions on the disc is to prevent the exporting of dvds from its native release region into a region where the movie is still in the theaters..

My buddy got a copy from getvcds about a month ago, and I got mine about a week ago, and they are completely different. His doesn't work on a PS2, and looks alot like a fake, where mine works great on everything, has the little region 3 deal on it, and looks better quality.

My point? I forget.

Just received the DVD. I have to say, with all the hype, I'm a disappointed, not with the quality of the DVD (it's great), but the movie itself. If anyone has seen those old, lenghty Chinese epic romance/martial art, CTHD fails in comparation.

I disagree, it was such a relief from watching people attacking with their hair in Bride With White Hair. That USED to be my favorite chinese/kunfu/romance flick, till CTHD came out.

Finally got it!!! The only thing that doesn't work was the trailer, but who needs that when you have the movie. The English dubbing is excellent, and I found myself having to watch the whole thing right when I put it in my player. Totally worth it!

Without getting to in depth, it was a phenominal martial arts movie because of the combination of action and the intricate sub-plots. You just had to let yourself go and appreciate what ang lee was creating for the viewer. Not everyone has to like the movie, but judging from the 11 or so nominations it got, most people do.

hears a tip when watching the dvd for all the mandarin speaking/understanding ppl who thought the movie was horrible.. turn on the english subtitles.. and then watch the movie again.. you'll be surprised how good the movie really is... the trick is to treat it as an american movie.. which it really is.. and kind of just pretend you dont understand the dialogs.. the movie will makes much more sense..

i think one of the reason why most ppl did not like this in asia was simply cus how horrible the original dialogs were.. you can totaly tell it was originally an english script that was then translated into chinese.. very inconsistant.. for the main characters.. first theres the thick mandarin accent.. and they all speak very modern day mandarin that feels out of place.. especially jen.. who totally talks like she just time traveled from the mordern days or something.. and then you have all the supporting characters speaking the older formal chinese that usually appears in these kinda movies.. it actually kinda funny to watch them talking to eachother like that.. i cant belive they let this thing actually go in the theaters in asia w/ a script like that... and its no surprise that all the asian critics totally bashed the movie down... this movie really didnt too well in asia despite all the awards...

now the english subtitles.. they are totally something else.. written very intellegently.. and present the movie a lot better.. clearly the intended audiance here is the american/english speaking ppl here... the first time i saw it.. was a asian cam capped vcd.. combined w/ the bad quality.. i really thot the movie sucked and made no sense what so ever.. i was baffled just like most my chinese speaking friends.. why so many ppl liked this movie.. and then.. i got to see the movie again.. on dvd.. w/ english subtitles.. now i finally understand... its amazing how the exact same pictures you see can totally be come so much more enjoyable when the appropriate script is acompanied.. the point here is.. if you can exprience the same thing that the target audience expriences.. then i think the movie becomes much more enjoyable...
