I have a verizon dsl connection using winpoet. My house has 3 computers - 2 win2k & 1 winme.

Now, I've set up windows' ics (using ethernet & a hub for networking between computers), and it seems to work fine...but, the 2 client computers(one 2k, and the me) are having a few problems:
1) When I try dslreports' speed test: »www.dslreports.com/stest/0 . I get a score of 500/0 (500 download, 0 upload).
2) I have problems uploading any files (via ftp)
3) I have problems sending any mail using outlook.
4) I have problems with certain webpages (i think large ones). like on espn.com, i can't get the rightmost table.
Also, »www.dslreports.com/pictures, I can't get any of the pictures...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I just setup my comps for connection sharing and Win2k setup the whole thing automatically, in about twn seconds it found the other comp and sent the relevant proxy info.

Are you logged in with admin rights?
Do all your comps have the same protocals installed?

Sorry I cant be more help-it was too easy for me to learn anything (by fixing it).

If you cant get it to work, you might give Wingate a look.

The first thing you need to see is if you can transfer files between the machines on the network. the easiest way is to make a bunch of shared folders and transfer files back and forth. if you can not do that then, the server is not seeing the clients.

check to make sure the lights are lit up on all the ethernet adapters. if they are not either the adaptor is not working or you did not install it properly or the cable is not connected properly.

check to make sure the lights are on, on the hub/switch. if there is a connection that is not lit up, then the hub and thus other machines can not see that machine if it is connected. Check the cable connections to make sure they are in.

If all of these are correct then go into network neighborhood on the server and make sure you see the clients in the computers near me area.

If that still does not work, try pinging the other machines if you know their ip's. run

winipcfg from all the machines and you can find a list of ip's

then on the server run cmd

at the command prompt type

ping <ip#>

for example

ping 192.168.0.1

is for my server.

you need to ping only the machines with internal ip's
those start with 127.0.0.1 or 169.254.xx.xx or 192.168.xx.xx

If you can not ping them then you have one of the problems described above.

If you have any other questions, email me

I don't know that much about win me though

as far as I know on any DSL that uses the PPoE crap you cand have a second NIC on the PC with the DSL...

When the second NIC has TCP/IP the DSL won't comunicate, without TCP/IP on the second NIC there is no way to do ICS...

I don't know if this is the case in Win2k, but I know thats how it is in 98se & ME...

Get a router it is the easiest....

And the cost of routers is way down....

I have the Linksys 4 port.. works great....

Why don't you use internet connection sharing under win2k? The OS is much more reliable and ICS works great under it. Windows ME is the buggest OS yet.

first off, thanx for the suggestions...
anywayz,

Dev, I definitely have communication between the computers. I've been transferring files, and what not, and the lights are on, and I'm not getting problems with collisions or anything like that on my hub. Also, forgetting about the winme, even just using the 2 win2k machines, the ics doesn't work correctly (the problems described in my first post). (giambona, i'm using win2k ics on the host machine - but one of my roomates is using me)

So, I'm not positive on what you're saying here. I guess cand is a typo, but i don't know if you mean can't or can =)
if i have the second nic, the dsl won't work?
Cause it seems to still work.

About the second NIC in Win2k i don't know if the DSL will work or not, But I know it won't in Win98...

If you have a second nic in and still see the DSL you should be able to run the ICS just fine
