I installed a Maxtor ATA/100 PCI adapter card into my system into my last remaining PCI slot. I was getting a Windows protection error while booting, so I needed to manually configure the memory usage so that no devices were conflicting. This solved the problem with the card, but when I attach the ribbon cable to a Maxtor 30 GB 7200 RPM drive (with jumper settings for master), my system hangs during bootup and will beep at me if I push any keys at least 5 times. The Maxblast software was able to identify and to partition and format the drive. Also, I enabled "boot from cd-rom" in my bios, but when I insert a cd to boot from, Windows does not appear to recognize it. With this third hard drive attached, Windows in safe mode will not recognize my ATAPI optical drives, so I reassigned their drives letters manually to allow for the assignment of drive E: for the third hard drive. However, my system still hangs. Anyone have any other ideas, besides wiping my drive?

Well, after using fdisk and a format on my main drive, Windows ME was able to instantly install and utilize my ATA/100 drive. Win98SE must be full of poop... :hmm:

I was going to say, maybe you need to check to boot order in the bios, but looks like you got it.

If so thats a no no,creates an irq problem.

yeah, i tried moving that card to every pci slot on my mobo, which was a hassle because every slot is taken! i tried messing with the bios, etc., but when i attached the drive in winme, presto chango! it worked!
