View Full Version : The most overrated cars ...

What do you guys (and gals if any are around) think are the 5 most overrated cars? And underrated if you want... I'm gonna get heat for this...
Overrated (not in any particular order):
1. Ford Mustang/Toyota Supra (mostly by the owners) - These cars in and of themselves are not overrated by the vast populus. But the owners of these cars think that their cars are the fastest thing on the planet. And while this may be a generalization... you know it's true.
2. Honda Civic Si - Boy racer car #1. Sorry Kebs.
3. Acura Integra GS-R - Boy racer car #2.
4. Honda S2000 - Rich boy racer car #3. It may make 240hp but 151 ft-lbs? C'mon.... some serious oopmh is in order.
5. PT Cruiser - I'm sorry. I really hate these cars.
Underrated
1. Porsche Turbo S (1997) - Watch for the I/C openings on the side of the car. Only a handful were even made. And most of the owners are of the type that aren't afraid to use it.
2. Buick Grand National - I saw one the other day that said, "I eat EVERYTHING for breakfast." Damn, these cars are fast. If you don't have to turn. And, no offense if you have one, the thing is so ugly that it makes itself underrated.
3. MR2 - Kind of the "forgotten" Japanese sports car among the Supra/NSX/RX-7 genre.
4. Mazda 323 GTX - This little machine is great!
5. E30 M3 - Especially those damn Evo I-IIIs (these were never sold in the US). Cranking out 200+ hp from a 4-banger back in the 1990s (pre-VTEC aka "the poor man's turbo") on a kick-ass suspension too.

Heheh, excellent list. I'd just like to agree with the overrated list, and add another Porsche to the underrated, since I don't know anything about the Buick.
6. '89 Porsche 944 Turbo S - Looks like a slightly cooler Dodge Daytona, out-accelerates everything else but the 911 Turbo, for WAY less money. Out-handles the 911, too.
Oh, and...
7. Audi RS4 - 0-60 in 4.9. But here's the catch: it's a freaking station wagon. I'm gonna get one for my mom so she can take the high school kids in their Supras and Mustangs off the line. :D

And looks far worse. Call me a purist, but I like the slope nose and big fenders.
And I simply assume you're talking about the '89 911's, right? Even so, wasn't that the first year of the C4? Oh, silly me, that was the year the C4's had massive understeer. Forget it...
Only problem with the 944's and 924's is their resale values are second only to that powerhouse, the 917. How's yours holding up, maintenance-wise?

Gotta give props to the 944, especially the relatively unknown 944S2. Good, clean, NA fun with handling that's second to none. Think it and the car is there...
Yeah, resale is crappy, but that's why if you can find a good used one w/ maintenance records, it'll be a steal. Lot's of fun to drive!

Very true. Stupid crack-smoking designers.

Uggh. Don't ask.
No, seriously, the engine, transmission, and all other essential driving parts are great, it's just everything else that wants to wear out at the drop of a hat. Like my damn headlights.

Now I see the dealer lots bursting with these things!

My grandfather has a 84 944 w/ under 40k on it. I don't think there's ever been a major mechanical problem with the car. Still starts, runs, looks pretty, and drives like a dream.

hate to get in on the porsche bmw deal, but the porsche is a purists car simple as that. It's pure sport and it wasn't designed for anything else. The bmw on the other hand is a great performer, but it's a sports sedan it's for the sporty family guy who can't have his porsche, with the family. Totally different genre of car and both deserve alot of respect they've all come along way from what they used to be. I just don't agree with going to water cooled.

VW is doing more to change the modern concept of car design than any company. (with a possible exception of Dodge/Chrysler)
My favorite ad of theirs would have to be the one were it shows the new beetle and then the tag that went something to the effect of "other cars are starting to look strange".

Yeah, it's funny, but car makers seem to do that regularly. Even Porsche, obviously my favorite marque, changed the gearing in a certain one of its vehicles so that it wouldn't have as high a top speed as another, more expensive one. If you want to know the models you'll have to go check around, and I doubt Porsche wants that fact to be general knowledge.
Oh, and I just realized I posted a rant about Type Rs in the wrong damn thread! So here's a link if you want to see why I think Integra Type Rs are overrated.

One more thing: I hate to burst your bubble, guys, but my 944 has parts in it with Audi and VW symbols on them. And they're the factory parts. Mostly relays and such, but they do cross over, apparently.

you had some valid points there man, but that car is a superb work, not many people can brag that they have the stuff on their cars that that one comes with stock. The car isn't a straightline racer like american muscle it's kindof a mixture between a golf and an nsx. Usually i don't give too much credit to japanese cars and some of their "fake" horsepower cars ala vtec, but that vehicle is really incredible. If it wasnt so great i doubt all of the most popular car mags wouldn't have been raving about it since it came out. Granted it's no m3, porsche, or beemer but it's fun pure and simple.

Yeah, I guess I should really get out and drive one, huh?
I'm sure it's a great car, and I didn't mean to make it sound like I think it's a piece of crap, but I still DO think that it's overrated. Probably because it's among the best of the rice-rockets out there (or rice-burners or whatever you call them) and it naturally got a lot of attention from that whole crowd.
Or maybe it's just because I'm a german-car-ophile. :D Sorry, guess it's my genes. (My family background's about 75% German) Let me know when somebody on the list gets one, and I'll drive it and tell you what I think. Or you can race it against my Porsche.

Ya see, hapoo, the problem with M3 does not lie fundamentally in the car.
It's that the drivers turn their noses up to anything else because someone told them that their M3 was the fastest thing ever. And they beleived them.
I've dealt with more than my share of snotty M3 drivers. And while you may not be the same (if you have an M3), you CANNOT tell me that those that drive M3s have a complex - an "M3 complex" if you will.

I think it was the most powerful production 4 of all time...still, I haven't seen a 968 in a long time. The Lexus IS300 - Look-at-me-I-used-to-be-a-ricer-now-I'm-a-pimp-by-night-day-trader-by-light. Plus it started that whole stupid-ass "Altezza" light crap.

the altezza is a nice car man, for a first production year they did ok, but what's up with the lack of a 5-spd. The porsche 944, which i used to love and the turbo model also are great cars they're fast light and really nimble through the turns however they break and break and break and break not to insult anyone who has one that's the facts from an overall perspective, and before anyone says it i'm sure yours is reliable, but most aren't. Theyre fun i'll say that, but the older ones get expensive really quick.
As far as speed the N/A 944 is a goat they're really pretty slow, but man the turbo screams that car flies once the turbo spins up. I dig the car, but honestly i can't recommend it to anyone.
KoalaFD
03-20-2001, 07:04 PM
You may be right, clutchy. But for a car that was so hyped to do only "ok" on its first year... I'd consider that "overrated". Maybe if the 2.0L turbocharged version were here, I would be thinking differently. But I'd rather buy a BMW or an Audi.
Plus, you can't deny the evil that was spawned with those rear taillights... which look ok on the Altezza... and nothing else.
clutchy
03-20-2001, 07:14 PM
overrated, yes i hope i never said it wasn't, that car was hyped and overrated so much, but everything is nowadays, audi's are bad man, and well bmw speeks for itself. We'll see what happens with the turbo. yeah i don't know what's up with people trying to make their car look like another car... go figure. stupid tail lights.
For the Altezza, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the top of the line in japan was the 2.0l 4cylindar, 5 valve/cylindar Yamaha built normally aspirated engine. The engine in the US car actually rocks pretty good and plenty (it's the normally aspirated inline-6 Supra/SC300/GS300 engine). Besides, there will be plenty of things to pump that up:

I'm not really serious, my car does take tons of work and isn't that fast, but it certainly toasts the majority of the riced-out civics and integras around Berkeley. And on Rt. 1 on a nice afternoon, with dry roads, it positively screams.
As for the battle over the Altezza, it seems to me that it's just one more decent, reliable, japanese car that's easy to modify extensively. Basically like a higher-class Civic. Nothing special in my eyes, but then, I'm really just not into the whole fiberglass and vinyl tape thing. The rice rockets that impress me are the ones that look basically stock except for some bigger wheels, but can dust my car off the line. Engine work, not body mods, that's where it's at.
Oh, and I'm even more impressed by the ones that can stop at the next light instead of running it because they didn't upgrade their brakes. :D
Here's another engine, too.

hehe, i drive an old accord with basically what u mentioned exhaust header and an intake no body mods no stickers. I did it a couple of years ago when i thought it would make my car faster, but the only thing it's done is give me better gas mileage which i don't mind at all. I live up in napa maybe we could uh stage a race or something, hehe jk, i was talking about the 944 in comparison to other porsches you'd spank the crap out of me, but if i still had my buick it would be on...

Hey man, I just bought one of those crappy BMWs you talk about. To be honest, i liked the BMW better than the IS300 during my test drive. Something about dishing out over 30k for a toyota seemed rather unsettling to me. Not to mention the fact that it kinda looks like a Honda with clear tail lights.

I got me a 2001 BMW 325i
-184hp 2.5 liter inline 6
-wood trim
-10 speaker stereo/cd (didn't want to get the haman/kardon system...too much$)
-power seats
-moonroof
-16" allow wheels
-5 speed automatic (its also has sports and manual transmission modes. I live in So Cal so there is no way I'm getting a stick)
Silver with black interior. Perfect for So Cal summers. haahaa. (I'm gonna fry).
I love the car. Granted there are tons of people who have one around these parts, but apparently, there is a reason.
I'm leasing it so I don't worry about the maintenance because its all included for 3 years...when the contract expires I'll just get another series. I don't even have to pay for oil changes!! Now if only gas was included....

About 550 a month. Traded in my 93 Mazda MX6 as downpayment. 15k miles a year is plenty for me considering I live like 5 miles from work. The best part is that I get to switch to a newer model every 2-3 years. Since I like to drive new cars, it works out great for me.

The traffic. It's freaking awful, if SoCal is like NorCal. I don't even like to drive my car in Berkeley because I'm just grinding away in first the whole time. I drive my roommate's automatic Saturn a good part of the time around town, and my car when I want to go somewhere that involves highway driving.

Yup, its the traffic, just like Ice-9 said. It's a pain getting around. Besides, the only way for me to get a stick shift was if I special order it, since most drive automatic here.

I could certainly agree on that! Loads of fun and no rice! My wifes' 4-cyl contour w/75k still can get up and run.

id have to disagree with the supra being over rated. that car is a monster. 0-60 5.1seconds from the factory and the way the jz engine responds to simple bolt ons is incredible.
most overated car has to be the mustang and the civic si.
the other day a riceboy in a civic si tried to race me. when he downshifted and his coffee can exhaust started to sing chinese opera, i simply floored it in 5ht gear. we were going about 43mph and i pulled on him in 5th gear! i couldnt stop laughing and the funniest thing is that i had four people in my little eclipse. mustangs are also overated. yes, they can be made to go fast . i used to feel nervous racing them but after hitting the track against alot of them. NO FEAR, not on the streets for sure. and dont fear the big hood scoops or ram air, cuz 90% of the time its fake. i know cuz i sell alot of them to those guys.
peace!

As I said before... the Supra is not overrated by the vast populus. Even in its stock trim, it is a very fast car (albeit kind of a boat in the sports car world) and responds incredibly well to little modification.
It's the owners.
It's all about the owners.
Look at Supraforums.com one of these days and tell me that they do not overrate their vehicles and I'll tell you that you're a liar. Sure. The Supra is a fast car. But when you tell me that your stock "Supdawg" whooped up on a Porsche 911T, Ferrari, or Lamborghini... please.
That in itself has earned the Supra the stamp of overrated. If Supra owners were normal, it wouldn't be so.
Ah yes, and did you hear that Marko (9 second Supra) of Supraforums challenged the Hennessey twin turbo Viper to a 1 mile race?? Supraforums claims that Marko will run all over the snake because of its superior 1/4 mile time (9 sec something vs. 10.45). What they may have failed to realize is that the Viper was only running 6-7psi....
Oh... whoops, Marko has a new setup. A V-12 perhaps? :)

Heheh. Somebody came onto the 944 mailing list that I subscribe to and challenged the entire list to race him and his 410 hp '96 Eclipse GS-T. Apparently somebody told him that 944s would be easy prey, or maybe he just wanted to brag that he beat a Porsche.
To make a long story short, somebody took him up on his offer, set up a track date, and whupped his ass in half a dozen drag races. A 944 Turbo S with a little modification will make 450 hp without any trouble, and the handling is far better than a lot of comparably-powered cars.
This isn't to say that Eclipses are overrated (although they are in many cases), I just thought it was funny. German cars rule! :D

ok the altezza being the supra n/a/gs300/sc300 engine, the engine can really rock. fmax makes a turo kit for the car is it was dynoed at a reliable and streetable 320BHP.
so hey for about $4600 you get a street monstor. i guess the only draw back then is its sad automatice only availability. i just sold a kit to a customer and im waiting for him to get that thing installed and dyned so we all will know if it performs as it claims. i like the way the car looks, maybe except for the rear lights(probably cuz its played out). oh well, peace

Gee... sounds just like a normal Supra engine to me. What kind of output do you get when you turbocharge the N/A Supra 3.0L? Maybe... a turbo Supra 3.0L?... say 320BHP?
Street monster?
I think not. Find me when you have a dyno chart that reads in RWHP and I may believe you.
Until then... it's a sport sedan with a turbo kit and ugly taillights.

I bow in deference. :)
Very nice!
But this is tuned more than your average turbocharged IS300, no? XS Engineering doesn't really futz around all that much with the cars that they actually stick their names on.
And I see where you got the 320HP "streetable and reliable" from...
The FMax site:
"We present to you our Bolt-on turbo system for the 2JZGE powered Supra of normal aspiration, Lexus SC300 and GS300. What our package offers is a complete system that reliably delivers double the BHP you initially purchased from the dealership. From the factory your system only produces 160-175 BHP, with the factory quoting 220 HP. After installation of the turbo system expect to produce 320 reliable BHP"
Let's see what your customer gets.

Yeah, it's a $7500 job I believe, parts and labor.
