View Full Version : OEM vs Retail Cpu's

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference between OEM and retail CPU's? I just ordered an Athlon 1.2ghz 266FSB and they told me that they only have it in OEM. I know the warranty is a bit shorter and you get a different fan. But performance/quality-wise does OEM or retail have any differences? Thanks.
Sorry if this question was asked before, but I've been searching and I couldn't find anything.

I don't know about the Athalons, but Intel OEMs do not provide a manufacturer's warranty. If you have trouble with it, you have to deal with whoever you bought it from.
Artitechturally, the chips are identical.

Jeff is correct. The OEM and retail box have the same chip hardware. The fan and warranty are different. (And w/ intel you only get the sticker with the retail box)

orite ... great, that's what i was hoping. i'm getting a 1 year warranty and the thermaltake chrome orb from the dealer. is the chrome orb good (i don't overclock). damn, they said they probably won't get the asus a7m in for another couple of weeks or so. looks like i'll have to wait a bit longer. thanks for the help guys!

Sure, if you don't overclock, the chrome orb will do just fine. It will work with overclocking too, but then you might consider something else.

FYI chrome is not a good conductor of heat. If you're lookin for a heatsink/fan take a look at the Heatsink roundup at Tom's Hardware. http://www.tomshardware.com

True, but he said he won't be overclocking. I have used RETAIL fans before and my cpu WAS overclocked. Well, it still is, acutally. My third system.. slot 1 Celery 300a @ 450. Man.. that was the best at it's time. :D

Personally I wouldn't go with the Orb. Go for something like the FOP 32, the FOP 38 is the king but the fan is so loud it will make you crazy in aout a half n hour. Also another great fan to consider would be the Alpha. Here's a link to some fine fans http://www.millisec.com I have also heard of Orb's cracking the chip so be careful when installing.

I'm liking the Thermal engine heatsink, but it needs a good fan to be really effective. If your not overclocking, prettymuch any heatsink will do.

thanks for the advice again guys ... i think the chrome orb will be enough for me though. i doubt i'll really need an expensive fan/heatsink cuz i don't plan on overclocking. thanks again! :)

im currently running a 1.2/200fsb, but i'm using a fop38 with arctic silver thermal crap. my chip hangs at around 43-45C idle if i do anything it jumps up to around 49C. U might want to consider a bigger fan that chips a beast. fop38, Yeah it's loud as hell for a fan, but with the case open it runs at 40idle 45C doing anything. I also have a 1ghz tbird 200fsb as well with a regular fan heatsink combo/ well actually it's a "heavy-duty" heatsink ball-bearing fan, but that runs a 50C all the time and sometimes goes over that. Just something to consider with AMD. both systems have 2 case fans one front one back plus p/s fan.

Clutchy, my god...you're idle temps with a FOP 38 are 40C!!! How hot is it in your room? My system is the same and it idles at 19 to 21C. One thing you might want to consider: Close your case back up and place a 90mm fan on the side facing your heatsink. This alone lowered my core temp by 8C. With that FOP 38 and Arctic Silver you should be getting some very cool temps....that is unless you keep the room temps at 90F.
BTW...the 200mhz you are referring to as your Front side bus is actually your System Bus. If you were running your FSB at 200mhz you would be overclocked to 2.4 ghz! Which of course is impossible.

ahhh i was thinking in terms of they double pumped the fsb from 100 to 200... so that number is sys bus huh? i'll have to remember that. Our ambient in here isn't much over seventy Fahren. I'm in northern cali, 19 to 21 that's insane i've never seen a processor run that low, my friend has a tbird 850 with a fop38 and he was running like 32C, but that's the lowest i've seen up here. Tell me more about your side fan idea.

Clutchy, while this picture is not of my case, I think you can get the idea of the side fan. My case has 2 of these fans on the side. I also have the top blowhole as shown in the pic. This takes the warm air from the top (heat always rises) and pushes it out of the case. I also have one in the front, one blowing air out in the back and a vid card blower. While most of this is extreme, I would say at least 1 90mm fan on the side (or one 120mm) is a good idea.
Here's the link, and no, my case is not red...LOL!

To do this mod all you need is a jigsaw and a steady hand. You simply trace the inside of the fan where you want to install it, directly across from the heatsink/cpu is where you want it, and cut away. You will also want to get a grill as well. I got all my stuff from http://www.millisec.com they ship quickly and have a good rep. Hope this helps!

The chrome orb isnt really chrome, its just a polished aluminum.
