Actually, I havent spent that much on my collection. I got a lot of them for free, either by buy one get one free or by buy X amount get 1 free. I also got a bunch as gifts, my family hates buying me things because I have everything, so they just end up getting me movies. I think I figured it out to me paying about $6 per disc, if I had to pay on them all. Might be a little less though.

What you have to realize is that the Matrix is one of the major reasons a lot of people ended up getting DVD players. ITs a great movie to show off the benefits of the enhanced picture quality, but there are better movies out there to do it with.

For those of you with big screens watch Titan AE, when the ship is playing with the wake creatures. Very sharp, realistic pictures. Especially for an animated picture. (And yes I do know about computer animation being "sharper" but this scene doest appear to be computer, or if it is some of the best ocmputer animation that i have seen.)

Back to the original comment though, I still like the Matrix, but it is relatively overplayed. I am just worried about a sequel.....

I don't know how long it'll be before the whole HD-DVD revolution, but people with huge collections should already be kicking themselves because so many titles that have been released so far aren't anamorphic digital masters. No offense, but if you currently have a humungous(sp?) collection, you probably don't know what "anamorphic master" means, don't appreciate the importance of having the best quality picture, or are just too rich to care. It has just been recently that the industry has recognized the importance of anamorphicaly mastering movies, so many ignorant studios just started re-releasing many of their titles in this new format. I was obssessed with collecting DVDs once. I'm glad I found out about the whole concept before I hit the 100 mark. Now I always make sure it is anamorphically mastered before I buy a movie. Still I cringe at the thought that many of my DVDs are not anamorphic. Of course foreign movies and less popular movies may have little chance of being re-released. In that case I go ahead and buy them. But in most cases, the studio will re-release movies as "special editions" or "collector's editions" with the new master. For those who don't know what it is, trust me, you want the anamorphic master! You can recognize whether it's anamorphically masterd be looking at the back of the box. look for the words, "Anamorphic" or "Enhanced for 16:9 widescreen TVs," etc... Not always truem but try to stay away from the word "Letterbox" if you can.

It's makes little difference now, but when 16:9 HDTVs become standard(very soon I believe) it'll make ALL the difference. Basically, first of all, the new master has many more vertical lines of resolution. And when displayed on a widescreen TV it'll get rid of the black bars on the top and bottom to fully fill the screen. When combined with a progressive scan DVD player, you'll have the best movie watching experience possible before any other big revolution comes along.

But isn't the real problem with current DVD's not what UCBSTAN mentioned, but that they don't have enough resolution to take advantage of HDTV resolution?

DVD's are pretty low res and will look like TV on a HDTV, no matter what.

But even among today's DVDs, an anamorphic digital master will still have much higher resolution than non-anamorphic masters. Just think of all the resolution that the black bars on a non-anamorphic master take away. You gain all those back on an anamorphic master. So in many cases (2.35:1 ratio movies) you get almost twice as much resolution in an anamorphic master...I'm not sure how all these compare to HDTV quality, but still you're spending the same amount of money, might as well, get the one that looks much better.

Yes thats exactly the problem. Full resolution HDTV is 1024 lines (Horizontal) DVD is about half that. Sony and Pioneer have already demonstrated HD DVD's and HD-DVD burners. They can fit about two and a half hours on a 22 gig disk using a blue laser. Personally i think this is the wrong path to take, with Florescent Discs around the corner that can fit up to a Terabyte, its a pointless task making an inferior 22 gig disk.
