If you can drive stick, it's a great deal:

Volkswagen Jetta: Wolfsburg edition, the 1.8t w/ sport suspension and nice rims.

It's not that hapoo doesn't like Subaru.

It's that hapoo LOVES BMW. I think he's named his kid that.

Naw, BMW doesn't really flow off the tongue too well, plus what would the other kids call him!

i think a stock subaru wrx 0-60 is around 5.8 or so, at least thats what it says in car and driver. i would have to agree on the wrx, except for the fact that its kinda ugly.....

i actually have a deposit for a wrx. problem is i'm a poor college student and the 20k is pushin it. it's such a nice car, i admit, but it's also the first year of production in both the us and japan, so i'm too too fond of that idea. i also have a friend who just got a 325ci... man, she's never gonna live that one down. she wanted a car that "doesn't make me seem like i'm spoiled".

You're right! 0-60 in 5.7-5.8 bone stock is amazing. This is a lot of car for the money. Although the MSRP of $23-24K+ is still out of babymike's range. Got Finance? :D

Since you said no rice cars, how about buying American? The Ford Focus has great engineering behind it. All the car mags love it (even typical rice rags like Sport Compact Car and Turbo Magazine), and they usually have very little good to say about American small cars. The ZTS is a four-door, the ZX3 is a hatchback, both with a 130hp Zetec engine. I wouldn't bother with the base engine. Even the automatic tranny is reasonably sporty, thoughof course a 5 speed manual is standard. A loaded ZX3 is about 17k, the ZTS four door about 19-20. Oh, and LOTS of companies are starting to come out with go-fast goodies for it, so you'll be able to tweak a Focus almost as much as you could a Civic or Prelude.

Before some of you "no American cars" snobs turn your noses up, read the reviews and go test drive one. Then provide an informed opinion. Ok? Thank you.

Let's see - other than new, how about used? Audi A4s can be found for under 20k. I found a bunch of BMW 318's, 323's, and 325's for under 20k. VW GTI VR6's can easily be found for less than 20k.

Hey, and I think SVT got a hold of the Focus, so you know that one will be good. Of course, it'll probably be in the same price range as the WRX, and I can't see how it would be possible to get the Focus up to the same kind of performance as the WRX...

Yeah, just get the Subaru. What's 3 grand spread over a couple years? :D

Does anyone know what the WRX is going for? I can imagine that dealers will be marking up the price above msrp, like they did and are still doing for the s2000. i hate people who take advantage of and appreciate nice rides.

WRX's are supposed to be about 26k, according to Car & Driver.

i was told by the subaru dealer that if you really want a good deal on the wrx, you need to order one. but i'm not sure if that's still possible, considering there are only 10,000 allocated for sale in the US. i walked into a subaru dealer and they told me if put down a non-refundable deposit that they'd give me the car for $750 off msrp. the sticker is about 24k for the wagon and about 500 more for the sedan.

Get a new Audi A4. It'll be close to $20k for the barest bone 1.8t. Look for a year 2001 when the new 2002 redesign comes out-they should be under $20k then.

The 2001 Audi A4 base price is $24,540. Lots of used A4s for under 20k though.
