Question for everyone.

What is the difference between a Geforce 2 Pro and a Geforce 2 MX? Is it worth the extra money for a Pro? Should I save the extra dollars and buy an Ultra? If I don't want to spend the extra cash for an Ultra, should I just go with the MX because the savings is worth it?

I currently have a Voodoo 3 3000 and am looking to upgrade. I figure with the Geforce 3 coming out, the price on all the 2's should fall.

Which one should I get?

The difference between the GeForce 2 Pro and GeForce 2 MX is:
The GeForce 2 MX comes with 2 pipelines capable of rendering two textures per pipeline in a single clock.
The GeForce 2 Pro comes with 4 pipelines capable of rendering two textures per pipeline in a single clock.

Most GeForce 2 MX's have a core running at 175MHz while using 166MHz Sdram.
GeForce 2 Pro's have a core running at 200MHz while using 200 Mhz DDR memory.

Is it worth the extra money for a Pro or Ultra? Maybe. How much are you willing to spend Chunga? What type of performace do you want? Answer those questions then we can talk about what videocard you should get.

Yes when the GeForce 3 is released prices on the GeForce 2 family will fall.

Please note you have other videocard options like the Radeon and Kyro 2.

Money is not really a problem. I don't think I can afford $500 for a Geforce 3, but I have seen Ultra's that are around $350 now. That I could probably swing.

What performance do I want? Better than what I get with my Voodoo3 3000. Right now, I play a lot of Day of Defeat and Counterstrike and I get horribly low FPS rates, like down in the low 20's. At a recent LAN party, I fell into the single digits. I used to have better when I used the WickedGL drivers, but I had to format my machine and I can't get them to install correctly anymore so I am stuck.

Anyway, I want better than 20-30 FPS in Half Life. What will I get with an MX? Will the Pro and Ultra give me resoundingly better results for the extra money, or is the MX going to do it for me? The other thing is, this is something that I will probably replace around Christmas/early 02 with a Geforce 3 type card. I hear that by then, the software will have caught up.

I have a:

1GHZ Athlon TBird
Asus A7V
128mb PC133 RAM
Voodoo 3 3000 with 1.07 drivers
Win98se

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any hints to increase FPS?

Chunga, I have the Ultra and if I was going to do it all over again I'd just get the GeForce 2 GTS. Those can be had for about $150 and perform great. The difference between the Pro and the GTS is the Pro (and Ultra) have 64 MB's RAM compared to the GTS's 32, not to mention that the Pro's and Ultra's are clocked higher. Still, for the price the GTS really can't be beat.
