View Full Version : Faster than a speeding dove
From ESPN's MLB page:
During the seventh inning of the Diamondbacks' split-squad 10-6 victory against the Giants on Saturday, Randy Johnson hit and killed a dove flying in front of home plate with a fastball. Johnson's pitch to the Giants' Calvin Murray was about three-fourths of the way to home plate when it struck the bird.

Hot damn! That thing just exploded! Cool!
I saw it on eSPN, but the sound was turned off. I just figured the ball had come apart or something.

What the hell is the big deal? The bird flew in front of the plate! There was no malicious intent: you saw for yourself how fast the bird was flying. Further, any sports fan can tell you how dangerous it is to try and stop a pitcher's motion, especially one as violent as Johnson's. It was an accident, pure and simple, and if those idiots at PETA are trying to convince you otherwise, well, that says more about them than Randy Johnson or baseball.

I don't think anyone could get too mad about this, it was clearly unintentional. Even Randy Johnson seemed a little down about it.
A player actually offered the bird to Johnson...he was no amused.

Yeah, Johnson's post game press conference:
"I didn't think it was so funny."

Anyone who ties this incident to the animal rights debate is either brain dead and missing the point ENTIRELY, or is just trolling around looking for a fight.

Ya, I saw that twice on tv. It definately sucks for the bird, but at the same time it is quite amazing. Imagine the odds. Either the bird was on a suicide mission and has very good timing, or it has very bad luck.

Certainly a prime example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Feel real bad for the bird, but I'm sure it over in an instant...

Well some people can really twist some of these jokes up. Such as jameslee's post about Combo Plates and that got turned into a big racial fight.http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=6063 I thought it was funny as hell. Just like this, it is funny and then someone comes in a totally kills the joke by saying it is animal abuse. Now we can all see that he did'nt mean to hit the bird being that even the most talented pitches could not time their throw like that. (i.e saying "I am gonna hit that dove")

The Big Unit probably felt like shit after that I would imagine. Paladin did you mean that you that you thought it was funny that the bird to be demolished like that or funny that people would get all pissy over nothing? PETA definitely has no argument here I agree. Its the same as when birds fly into windows I think just unfortunate circumstance.
