View Full Version : Not a big fan of all the recent Got Apex Moderation

Though it doesn't really affect my life in a major way, all of this Got|Apex Moderator action of closing threads upsets me, somewhat.
I don't know why it pushes my buttons, I didn't have a stake in those threads... I wrote in one, but that was early on. So it makes no difference to me that way.
And don't get me wrong, no one dislikes it more when people whine about pipe-dream deals falling through and then threatening suit than I do... but I just skip over it and pay it no attention.
When it comes down to it, though, it's not my expensive server space that it (like this thread) is filling, I guess.
Dave.

I'm a little confused. I see the title of the thread, and I see your point, but then most of your post argues against your own point.
I agree (with the title of the thread, anyway) on principle. Censorship is a bad thing. The first amendment is there for a reason.
But in practice, I have to say that the GAM's actions seem pretty fair. Because there are, in fact, children that access this site (no offense, Passwird, Paladin, and any others I don't know), appropriate measures should be taken to not expose them to material which could be used by their parents to sue GotApex. However unlikely that may be.
Besides, if they want to see porn or talk about poop, I'm sure they can find that SOMEWHERE on the net. ;)

Just curious. Things have been a little crazy here lately. Remind me which thread you are talking about? :)

There was one about some Intel survey that got cut halfway into the second page and there may have been one or two cut on the Viking RAM topic.
I think just seeing two of them in a short period sent my wheels a-turnin'.
And Ice-9 is absolutely correct... I do argue against my own point... which might hint at how much I am struggling with this topic.
Plus... this is not MY web site and I get FULL use of their site with out paying them a cent (except for referrals... a-hem... on some items that also happen to be priced at an unbeatable rate), so I don't like to complain.
What it felt like... was like someone at Got|Apex was having a $h**ty day related to, or completely unrelated to some post, and reached his breaking point. That's the best way I can describe the way seeing those closures made me feel about the fourm.
They had valid reasons... to close the threads, but it also felt a little big-brother-ish (you know what I mean... not that terrible TV show).
So... ok, I vented. Let me know if what I said made any sense. Very honorable of the GAM to step up to the plate.
Dave.

Even *I* can have a bad day. The threads you were talking about just were dragging on so much that it was getting boring and taking up space in the Got Deals forum. I have no problem with those topics being taken to the Off Topic or the Suckage/NSS, but when a thread begins to be 3 or 4 or more and becomes NOT a deal (meaning, it is more of complaints or just conversation), it gets closed/deleted/moved, whatever. Make sense? Those weren't against anyone personally or even done in anger. Just practicality. Hope that helps. :)
maybe u should just move it.. instead of closing it...

Oh great and mighty GAM...
How does one signal to you that a thread is either in the wrong place or that it has spun out of control and should be moved and/or locked.
I am not against moderation of posts as long as you realize that your role (and Apex's liability) has now shifted from that of a publisher to an editor (i.e. Yahoo cannot be sued for libel on their boards because they don't edit them, but a place like Motley Fool can because theirs are edited).
I wrote a few relevant briefs when I worked in the message board area for a few major sites (I have done a lot :-)

Interesting...hadn't thought of that. Libel law has always been an interesting subject to me. Will have to do a litte research on this one now. Thanks! :)
