The Bastards! In case you haven't heard, NorthPoint (DSL carrier) has gone bankrupt stranding thousands of customers (including yours truly) without service. My ISP, along with other ISPs I'm sure, is scrambling to get customers switched to a new carrier. Northpoint was supposed to give some notice, but pulled the plug. AT&T is taking over NP's assets, and don't really want the customers.
From my ISP's web page
"March 30, 2001— Last night instead of issuing disconnect notices to their suppliers and allowing the network to shutdown gradually, NorthPoint Communications purposely dispatched personnel to turn off their core switches causing an immediate shutdown of their entire network, and leaving over 100,000 lines with up to 500,000 users without Internet Access.
Today, California regulators ordered bankrupt NorthPoint Communications to halt the shutdown of its service and to provide customers with 30 days notice before pulling the plug. However, according to the NorthPoint lawyers, it would be next to impossible to restore service and an impossibility to sustain it.
Despite these unfortunate circumstances, DSLi will continue to work around-the-clock to minimize its subscribers downtime. The DSLi/Rhythms Joint Task Force is working with your telephone company to provide the fastest possible restoration of service. In most cases, the migration takes place at the central office and will not require a new line or any reconfiguration of equipment."
So now, I just sit and wait. And wait. The worst thing is, I WANT to go into work just so I can use the T-1. I've become a bandwidth junkie. I wonder if there's a 12-step program for that...
