View Full Version : Forget about SETI.....

OK, anyone with spare CPU cycles (and who doesn't have a few of THOSE lying around) - UD.com (United Devices) is distributing a SETI-like app/screensaver that will use idle CPU cycles to help find a cure for cancer and do genetic research.

Not only are you helping your fellow man, but they enter you in drawings for some prizes, like a trip to Boston to see the Blue Man Group, free plane tickets, PS2's and cash.

If you're interested, I have created a GotApex team that you can join. Not a lot of people are running this app yet, so we have a good shot at going to the top of the list - http://members.ud.com/services/teams/

To join, go to http://www.ud.com/home.htm and click on 'Volunteer your PC'.

I joined yesterday. I had to re-install it twice though to get it to work. The picture of the molecule is much more cooler looking than the seti one I think. Finding the cure for cancer seems more likely than finding life.

I'm at work but my computer at home must be doing some massive number crunching since I leave it on 24/7.

Cheers to you and let's hope we find a cure.

Great idea, Jeffbx! I've signed up. Come on apexers, let's put our name at the top of the list. You wouldn't want anyone from France ahead of us, would you? :heh:

you see, i'm doing really well, i'm ranked 95,051 out of 2,910,473 users, so i've completed more units than 96.729% of all users.

so, i really want to break into the top 1000 users. ahhhhhhh what to do, what to do??

there does not seem to be a linux client. since a command-line client runs faster than a gui one, then i don't see why they don't if they are serious.

anyhow, i noticed that anandtech has a team. so, we better get on the ball

Its bad enough i'm giving them my cpu power, but they're looking for little green men!! Jeez guys get your priorities straight, with all the problems in our world I think its better we focus on something more worthwhile. Personally i dont give a rats ass if there are aliens out there. At least UD is good :) (unless they're actually using the cpus to play Quake at a really high fps :D)

Suddenly about a million people just joined.

So much for any possible chance of winning.

Excellent. I wish there was more of this kind of thing going on. :D SETI is cool and all, but kind of a waste of time.

that is only because the aliens are onto us and have changed their patterns to remain hidden

The total number of users who have this rank:

You have completed more work units than:

Same with mine... I've been running for 14 hrs, and have just completed my first (protein) or whatever, but I still have zeros for all my stats...

i think topane's cheating - he's probably rigged the entire office that he supports up under his name!

no wonder his (l)users are always having problems! :)

14 thousand points indeed!

14 thousand points indeed! :D Naw, if I had the entire office rigged up I'd have more tham 14,000 points ;). Got a few older boxes doing nothing but sitting in a corner, so what the heck...

Oh, and my luzers have problems 'cause they think the "any" key is the power switch :D

just curious - how many's a few? i've got two boxes going - my work PC (P3-800 with 256MB) and my home box (AMD 1.2ghz with 256MB pc2100). UD thinks neither of my boxes isn't even worthy of carrying the jock strap of its "high end" system.. pfft!

a friend wrote to me recently who gets calls like yours sometimes. he said, "a user just called me. he said that he was having a problem with his computer not shutting down. i went to take a look. he had selected the 'restart' rather than 'shut down' radio button"

don't know how you fellas do it. :puke: i'll take hacking code any day over dealing with the likes of them!

I gave up on it... the damn thing was cheating me... i would let it run all day, and then when i would go to turn it off at night, I would lose all my hours for the day... No wonder my total time for this fricken month was only 3 days...

I set up a GotApex team on Entropia

They are primarily using it to combine proteins to fight AIDS. (You can pick what you want it to work on)

Join the team and play.

It runs in the background all the time (like Distributed.net) and is also a screen saver. Seems pretty stable after a few weeks

Personally Id rather have my pc do research for cancer than aids. (Cancer runs in my family)

As for the hours logged, thats not the point, the point is it might help cure cancer. Stop trying to make it a my D*** is larger contest, or a My PC can crunch a packet 10sec faster than yours.

I've got 9 so far, 5 are 200mhz pentiums with 64MB, my notebook (850mhz), and a couple of new 1ghz PCs. I was even thinking of putting it on a couple of our servers and only set it to run on weekends ;) The best PCs here are only 67% as good as their top machine, according to them.

I do mostly network stuff here. I usually get a couple of hours to amuse myself--I've been learning some Linux, setting up an Apache server, and now I'm trying to tackle HTML and perl. So it's not as bad as you think, or not here anyways :D
