I have a DVD-Rom but my monitor sucks. I'd like to use that and view the DVD's on my TV.

1) What is a good solution (card/other hardware) to hook up my computer to a television (rca input)?

2) Does it depend on my video card?

3) Do I need to get a new one?

Thanks in advance.

If your card doesn't have a video out then you are stuck going with a DVD decoder card. Hollywood Plus decoder card can be found for about $50.........

you can use your tv as a monitor, but it will suck as far as text goes. graphics will run great, but text will suck. this is simply because a computer monitor has a better pitch than tv's do. so as far as watching dvd's and playing games, the tv will be great.

it also depends on how fast your computer can decode the dvd stream. so either you need a dvd decoder card or a vid card that works well with dvds and a really fast processor. otherwise the quality will be pretty low, especially when there is alot of action and fast color changes (ive noticed this a lot in explosion scenes).

I have a Radeon 64mb VIVO card and the DVD playback on the monitor is crystal clear and out to a tv is as good as a set top box. As far as text, video out to a tv will never be as good as it is on a monitor. You will go blind if you decide to read alot of text on a tv. The resolution of a TV is just not there to compete with that of a monitor. Not to mention the "glow" the text has when on a TV, it is down right irritating. Go out and get you a bigger monitor and a lay-z-boy recliner and set it all up and you will be set. just make sure you get the lay-z-boy with the built in cooler in it and remote holder. Have you all seen those $200 sony remotes that do it all, I have remotes for everything, porch lights, televisions, vcr's, dvd player, car, stereo, lights for all throughout the house, tv tuner for the computer, SBLive card remote, I am a lazy man....hahaha....oh and not to mention a wireless keyboard and mouse with laptop on a nightstand tied into the network.

I have the creative DVD 12x + Dxr3 decoder....

i have ran a s-video to my dad's big screen to the dvd and it was perfict....

I also played DK2 on it ( using my old voodoo3 with TV out) and that sucked big time........

but the s-video out o a DVD decoder should work fine.....

The problem is that the card only lets the tv go a max of 800x600, and the screen is larger than that. Hence the mouse moves the screen around, so you can see all of it. As for my system its a p3650 o'clocked to 866 with 2 sticks of 128 PC150 ram @ cas2

my dads laptop has that same problem, i think it is the video card because my radeon aiw lets me do 1024x768 on my tv without any problem.
