Lets say perhaps I had 100 dollars. And a shitty SavageIII. I really wanted to run QuakeIII at 1024*780 and I wanted a 1000+ score in 3dMark2001. Would it be a wise investment to get a Geforce2 MX 32SDR or a GTS or wait for ULTRA to drop?
I can get an sdrMX for say 70?
What will I be missing, will I be upset that I didnt wait or save more for an Ultra G3 or DTS?
{excuse me for a minute bwahaahaa Savage goatblower}
Ultra is not going to drop anywhere near that price range.
Geforce2 MX 32SDR is a decent card but unfortunately 1024x768x32 is when it starts running out of bandwidth.
Don't forget about another inexpensive option. The 32 meg ATI RADEON LE which may be hacked into the regular 32 meg DDR radeon.
If your willing to spend more take a look at the GTS and 32 meg DDR radeon. The new Kyro 2 will also be coming out in 2 weeks.

Till August? Ultra's will be cheap? like 200 cheap
There's the possiblity that could happen. But in the meantime your still using that pos savage card. My advice? Buy a decent reasonable priced card now.

comprimise, get a GeForce 2 Pro card.
newegg has the MSI pro card for 204. Better than GeForce 2, can be overclocked to near ultra performance.

Yes, this is a very good price by a good maker.

As people noticed that cards like Geforce2 Ultra and Pro have very high memory clock which would create a higher heat than usual!! So, the reliability issue come in. Would such heat shorter the cards' use age ? @@ and does the heatsink (on Elsa and Hercules)of the ram makes difference that would make the card last longer @@
Thanx for answering the questions : )
P.S. Thanx to Geforce3 which take the high price mark of Geforce2 Ultra, now Ultra is around 300$ ^^
If the heat does shorten the cards life it won't matter because it'll be collecting dust forgotten in the back of your closet. That or buried in a landfill somewhere.
If your concerned about heat get a card cooler to blow on your videocard.
And to think people ragged upon the GF3.

I ordered a MSI geforce 2 GTS 32MB from newegg.com and got a geforce 2 GTS pro card instead. It's wierd cus that model (starforce 820) isn't even on the MSI website. Seems like it's just a 32MB version of the pro card, for about 50 dollars cheaper. I don't think the extra 32MB of memory makes too big of a difference. For some reason, it dosen't like my computer though. It resets my computer once in a while when i'm in a game. On my roommates computer though, it scored a 6500+ under 3dmark 2000 with a 700 athlon @1024 X 768 X 16. I was pretty impressed. Too bad it dosen't work well on my computer. :bawl:
chosenfool: You are aware that Leadtek GeForce 2 Pro card uses slower 5.5ns ddr ram {363Mhz} instead of the 5ns ddr ram {400Mhz) normally used by GeForce 2 Pro cards?
MSI 64 meg GeForce 2 Pro card back in stock at NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=48&manufactory=1312). But at $300 {likely a mistake}.

hrm...i've got some questions, since i've got a low budget i'm limited to the following...
leadtek geforce2 pro 32mb - $139
some geforce2 mx400 - some dirt cheap price
now, from what i've read the geforce2 pro is/can be just a little bit slower than the gf2 ultra, while the gf2 mx is about the speed of a geforce1; is that correct? I'm currently using a TNT2u, so I think either will be a decent upgrade, relatively, but the gf2 pro is more future-proof, right? because the gf2 mx is limited by memory, and the pro helps get rid of that bottleneck?
"now, from what i've read the geforce2 pro is/can be just a little bit slower than the gf2 ultra, while the gf2 mx is about the speed of a {DDR} geforce1; is that correct?" Yes that is correct.
"because the gf2 mx is limited by memory, and the pro helps get rid of that bottleneck?" Right.
The GeForce 2 Pro will be a decent upgrade for you DaNewbie
