Latin is dead, and people who go around rifling off Latin phrases are pretentious, conceited "intellectuals" who like to impress themselves with their "obviously superior" grasp of language. I remember the kids who were in the classics club learning that drivel. They were always the smarmiest, Biff and Dotty type geeks.

So there.

I cheated:

I made the unfortunate mistake of taking French in high school and college :puke:

I sense a little bit of bitterness here.

I took fives years of Latin and I feel that it has increased my vocabulary skills quite considerably. However, I didn't go around yelling, Carthago delinda est! at every opportunity I had... just some :D

the only latin i know is the kind you would find on a farm.
(that wasn't even funny.)

i've actually been doing that alot lately, saying things that are so NOT funny, and then laughing at myself for saying it.

or, maybe, i'm just losing my mind.

Latin is still a very useful language. I only took it for 1 semester, but i believe it has helped my vocabulary. I come across latin constantly in my Philosophy classes, and my old roomate had to know some of it for his biology classes. Maybe you should think before making an ignorant statement like that. But thats just my opinion.

a lot of people with a little latin are pretty friggin pretentious, but i have found my latin useful time and time again, and i love etymology, linguistics, dead languages, and i don't think i've ever inserted gratuitous foreign words or phrases into any of my speaking or writing ... in fact, i tend to keep it all to myself for fear of ridicule.

i'm neither biffy nor dottyish, so please don't hate me.

It's all about singing in Latin! (ok.......so it's not.......I like singing in other languages much better, like Italian)

Well there always is the possibility that people seem pretentious to you, because you possess a less than average intelligence. Now I'm not saying that it is the only reason, just a possibility.
