Well, not really a deal...but I just *think* I heard on the news that due to the california surplus money they are giving EVERY califonia taxpayer an additional $150 regardless of how much tax they paid...
Can anyone verify this??? Was I just imagining it??
Thanks..

you weren't just imagining that report. I saw it on the news yesterday also. California has a $1.76 billion surplus, and rather than doing something good with it (education system, education system, education system!!!!), davis is giving it back. I would gladly give up 150 bucks to help us get out of 49th place for education. What was Davis thinking? I'm a republican, but education is still important. Nobody from Missouri or Arkansas can outthink a Californian, but forsome reason we're still ranked lower than those i-dots.

i got 200 dollars back (from 200 withheld), so i should get 150 on top of it, but oh well.

Is the ENTIRE surplus being given back as refunds?
regardless...........yeah.....the money should go to the schools.... ALL of it should.
I mean, it just makes sense.

I paid nearly $50,000 in taxes this year, including to California :-(
I should not be reporting all my income (like from trading at NexTag.com), but noooo I am too honest (and am afraid of going to prison)
While I would welcome the money, it is not that big os a deal (it will probably cost close to that just to administer this program - if true)

yes, all 1.76 billion is going back to the taxpayers. well...1.76 billion is going back, so maybe the surplus was actually more than that. who knows?

better than 50% of the money given to schools has gone to raises for the teachers
i for one think if they are not doing the job then i should have the money to put my kid in a school where I CHOOSE the teacher and the quality... 2cents and WAYYY of topic

Wow, that does sound ludicrus (sp???), I know Alaska pays back similary yet they have the pipline and get a refund of atleast 2 grand a person. Although it would be better in education, put it towards the 150 of the purchase at Staples 200 -50 (coupon) -150 (CA refund). What a great country!

the reason that alaska gives so much money (not a tax refund) is because they allowed the construction of the pipeline and the resultant destruction of the environment. Also (love to be the bearer of good news), the Alaskan "refund" is not 2K, but...catch this (my grandparents lived there for a year), 50K. My grandparents made 50,000 for just living in the state for one year, not even counting the money they made form Social Security and stocks and stuff like that.

ps - i'm not sure that that is the average amount, but i know that that is what they made from the pipeline.

Hey Talk2raffi, can you find a link or something? I can't believe my eyes. That means that I get $150 on top of the $1 I already got from the State of California.
Its great to see this money, small amount it may be, back with the people who have worked hard for it and who know what is best to do with it. No doubt about it taxes are way too high. Just throwing money at the public educational system (or many other governmental run institutions) doesn't mean we see the results we should see and should demand for all the money spent on it.
For example here in Montgomery County, Maryland the per student spending is over $8,500. Yet many students who were born and lived their entire lives in Montgomery County and went to the Montgomery County public school system still need remedial education at Montgomery College and University of Maryland. DC $pends over $10,000 per student and is near dead last in the nation for education.
The problems of public education are myriad. The main problems are:

The stunning lack of displine. Students can literally get away with murder before anything is done to remove these disruptive, destructive and unruly influences.

Parental disinterest. Some parents (assuming some of these kids have parents and that's a subject for another thread) just don't care about what their kids do. Their attitude is its someone else's problem to deal with not theirs.

Incompetent teachers who never should have been hired. Some were hired because of distasteful discrimatory quota systems.

and finally is the NEA. A fearful BIG union that shrilly decries desperately needed education reform thereby holding children hostage to its failed policies. A union which is much more interested in money and preserving its power while giving nary a thought to the concerns of children.

All of these truly add up to cause America's mediocre educational system not lack of funding.
