Win 2000/98se Duel Boot Questions

I'm about to do my semi-annual re-format/re-install and I for a laugh I thought I take a stab at a 2K/98se duel boot. Can anyone point me to a good "How To" resourse for this.

While we're on the subject has anyone done this themselves? Are there any common pitfalls I should watch out for? Am I in for a world of pain? :eek3:

I have done it in the past without any problems. Just make sure that you install Win2k after you install Win98se.

That's probably the easiest dual boot you can do. Like coleslaw said, install 98 first, and format your entire drive as FAT32. That way you can have both OS's on your C: drive. Just make sure to install them in different directories! By default, 98 will be in the C:\WINDOWS directory, and W2K will be in the C:\WINNT directory.

W2K will automatically detect 98 and set it up in the boot loader. You can even run the W2K setup from within 98, if you like. Just pop in the W2K cd & let it autorun.

if i wanted to install win98se and win2k on the same partition, would i be able to share the same program files folder? more specifically would i be able to install programs like ms office in c:\program files\office for both os's and still run office without any problems? i have always used separate partitions for the 2 os's, but if i could share the program files, it would save a lot of disk space for games and other big files.

I haven't tried this myself, but I know others who have. Just install office in the same directory under both OSs. You'll have to run the install program twice, but as long as you point to the same directory each time, it won't duplicate the program files.

ive been hesitant to try this simply because i dont really have time to mess around with installing and reinstalling stuff if it gets messed up, but if it works it would save a whole lot of disk space because i have a lot of large apps, files and games which take up most of my disk space as it is. thanks for the info Jeff

One potential benefit of using FAT32 for Win98 and NTFS for Win2K is that when you're in Win98 you won't be able to read the NTFS partition. This has proven handy when I've had kids in the house. Boot to Win98 and let them play games without worrying about the files on the NTFS partition, and you can keep them from logging into Win2k if they reboot anyway.
