Ok so I upgraded to win 2000. I was running Win98SE. I love to play Quake 2 online and while I was running Win98 I was getting 180 FPS with my geforce but now in Win2K I'm getting 60 FPS!! WTF? I updated the drivers for the card. Though I didn't reinstall quake 2. I'm still using the old installation I've had for a while but that shouldn't make a difference right? I need to some ideas on how to fix this problem. Thanks

...ok...
Here's some ideas:

RAM: Do you have enough. You shouldn't try to run games in Win2k w/o at least 128M.

Drivers: Make sure you have the newest video drivers for Win2k.

Background programs: Win2k uses lots of stuff in the background. You can reduce what is running in the "Services" area of your admin rights. Tweak3D.com has a really good guide on how to play around with your services.

OpenGL tweaks: Also check Tweak3d/TweakFiles for OpenGl/Quake2 tweaks.

Hope that helps. I know how unnerving it can be playing a game at only 60fps :banghead:

Chances are its a RAM issue...My friend had problems running W2k with 128mb ram...after he went to 256 everything was fine.

Win2k is known for being slower at games, not THAT much slower but your not going to get 180fps

Also, don't make the mistake of letting the frametest results blow the game for you. If you SEE a difference in performance, then go to town on the tweaks. If your only problem is the number that the frametest is displaying, then, well, keep on playing and lie to your friends.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I don't know exactly what could have caused such a dramatic drop in the frame rate. Could it be that I need to install a Win2K version of quake 2? When I play the game I can't SEE any noticeable difference. Could it be that the "timerefresh" test is not accurate or it somehow got altered when I installed Win2k?

I just remembered-vsync. Your drivers may not be disabling vsync in win2k and the video mode may be defaulting to 60Hz! You would get no more than 60fps. I'm such a dope!

Oh well.

I dont know about the Vsync but win2k automatically limits the refresh to 60 (for me anyway) in 3d games :( I have yet to find a way around it.

WOOHOO!!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! I love you guys!!! :-D That was it. After I turned off vsync my frame rate shot back up. In fact, it's better than it was in 98SE. I'm getting over 200FPS!!! Not that anything over 100 matter but WOW!!
