Hey folks, what do you think I should do with this (Big toe nail that is)? Should I rip it off, leave it alone, see a doctor (nah), Sand it down, or fill it in with Wood putty?

Well it happened a long time ago when I was like 3 or so and I was riding my tricycle barefooted down the hill and my toe got caught in the spokes of the tire. And it has never been the same since. It was split in two pieces. It’s had crack down the center since then, and the other day I deiced to start cutting on it and see if I could fix it. And now it looks like the pix and I cant decide what to do to it next

here is my expert dropped-out-after-the-first-year-of-not-quite-med-school opinion...

if it doesn't hurt, no harm done. do whatever you want. however, the yellow cast and thickness of the remaining nail are pretty sure signs that it is infected with fungus, which can be cleared up with a month-long round of anti-fungoid stuff. there is a brand-new anti-foot-fungus pill on the market that has recently gotten some heavy advertising, so it is very likely that a doctor would be able to set you up with a buttload of free samples if you explain you can't pay for it.

once the fungus clears up, it will grow smooth and strong, but the previous trauma may not allow it to grow back to its former glory as far as shape and size go...

Welfareloser is mostly correct. The yellowing and thickness do indicate an infection of some kind. Not necessarily fungal, but it seems likely.

As for treating it....there are oral antifungals you can take for it (Nizoral, Sporanox and Lamasil among others), but given that you're a poor college student, I'd expect that you probably couldn't come up with the few hundred it costs for a typical course. I'd also venture a guess that any student health insurance probably won't cover it either, given it's cost.

Your best best short of that, would be to try a topical application of Lamasil cream (available over the counter at your local walgreens drugstore). It's about $10 for a tube, but it's the best stuff on the market (or rather I should say, it's new enough that most fungi haven't developed resistance to it yet). You do have to be diligent about treating it though, skippping a two days could negate any effects and could even lead to the fungus gaining resistance.

dude, i had a spokes incident on my right index finger when i was like 5 and it just finished growing out when i was like 25. so it was split for a long time. mine wasn't gross tho. prolly cuz i don't walk on my hands....anymore.

anyhow, dude....take that thing to a doctor, pronto! you don't have your parents medical insurance? you took a pic, so i would imagine that you have a web cam. how did web cam come before health? just curious...i mean, maybe you borrowed a friend's. or maybe you took the pic at school. but, ya, cut some beer money or something. it prolly is a fungus or bacteria...but best to hear from a doctor. even if the answer is to rip it out. some yokel can tell you that he ripped his out, and that his grew back fine, but then you rip yours out and get a bad infection and have to take the toe with it.....just say no, dude. isn't there a free clinic in your area? if you say that you live in cardiff or palos verdes or something...then something is wrong with the situation.

I have never hadanything like that, but I smashed 2 nails before... My big toe and my ringfinger, the best bet is to have it burned off with a laser, where then the nail will get a total restart... But first get rid of the herpes or what ever fungus you have. The nail once gone and clean should come back new and clean, but rpob diff shape... I my experience the space allowed to grow the first time determines the shape, so if there is a mass of crap and skin, it will not expand properly...

Good Luck, and be a bit more cordial about this... I have never seen a new member come in this form of glory.
