Anyone know anyplace that has Nero Burning ROM 5.5 cheap or have any thoughts or experience with it? I have Adaptec 4.0 deluxe and am looking to upgrade and have heard horror stories on adaptec 5.0 w/win2k. I had enough troubles w/4.0 on win2k and don't want to fight with 5.0. Any other software similar to them that you've had luck with?

I started using NERO 5 after I did a clean install after having trouble with EZCD 4.3 with Windows 2000. It gives by far much less problems than EZCD. I am having a problem with NERO which can be lived with, but have not had time to work with it as yet. If I copy a CD it will copy from reader to burner just fine at 12X. If I burn from IBM 60 GB EIDE HDD I can only burn at 8X. EZCD when not giving some other problem would burn either way at 12X. If you are using EZCD packet writing be very careful about NERO packet writing you may lose something.

Thanks for the info. Out of curiosity what cdrw are you using. I have a Plextor 12x4x32 SCSI and have no problems out of it, just Adaptec. What media are you using? If it is a generic brand it may be giving you the 8x write.

Plexwriter 12/10/32 SCSI, Reader is UltraPlex Wide 40X. I have used every brand I can buy. The best ones I have used are generic which are guaranteed to 16X. I am sure it is software not hardware but will figure it out.

I would have to agree with you that it is software or maybe the firmware needs updated? Only guessing, doubt it is the firmware. It certainly isn't because of having a slow writer or cdrom! Pardon me while I wipe up the drool! The only cdrom device I would rather have than the Plextor Ultrawide is a Plextor DVD scsi drive. Maybe someday! Yes I like plextor!

I have been watching the DVD drives for a SCSI and have only seen a couple (not Plextor)but don't do any dvd anyway. I have noticed though I see less CD-ROM drives around lately. I am on that ROXIO server and there are many people complaining about the EZCD 5.01. Many problems with it and Windows 2000. I had a copy but sent it back when I read all those problems. There were many problems with 4.XX and still are but now the problems with 5.XX. They just can't seem to get it right.

After having problems w/4 I thought about upgrading to 5 until, like you, starting seeing problems w/win2k and decided to look at other software. I had heard a lot of people liked Nero so I thought I would try it. I probably wouldn't use the dvd even if I had it, must be a pride thing.

im using nero 5.0xxx and i havent been having any problems with it under win2k. im also using CLONECD with it, and they both work fine. The solution? Oddly enough it's adaptec's EasyCD Creator 4.
Both Nero and CLoneCD (and even mp3 rippers like audiocatalyst and CDEx) need the winaspi drivers that adaptec has sole rights to. Win98 has that installed by default, but not win2k. By installing adaptec easycd, this gives your system the needed aspi layer that nero and clonecd and audiocatalyst need to work without glitches.
so basically its just installing the easycd program and leaving it in your system to make the other programs like nero to work well. Set it and forget it. You dont have to use it (agreeably, it's slow, and uses up a LOT of resources under win2k). just another necessary evil.
I think you can actually download the needed aspi files separately from adaptec. I was having some problems with my first plextor and tech support suggested I use an updated aspi file.

Is Nero 5.5 available anywhere yet? The website says it'll be available in April, but there's no mention of a specific date.

Enabling DMA (look on Nero's site) for each of the IDE channels fixed any problems I had with Nero.

Hey GAM you really freak me out when you do that, you know. It's like walking into a room thinking you're all alone and you're startled because someone calls you from behind. I've been warned about saying some wrong things and whenever I see a post of mine edited, I think, "what did I do wrong this time?"
Is this forum really that sensitive about copyright issues???
Yes this forum should take the chance of being fingered as a warez forum and than get into trouble as a result. :o

Well, two threads above this thread was about the "New Napster" and also "a Good PSX ModChip" huh? Are they that different when it comes to copyright issues? Maybe they are. What do I know.
How much is Nero, anyway?

Well supposedly if you have a legit 5.0 version you can upgrade to 5.5 right?
My problem is that the EZ Creator program wont let me do a cd copier option. If I have the source disk in the cheap cd drive and a blank cd-r in the plextor 12x it just spins and then says that the program couldn't find the read cd-rom. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I might just opt for nero but if I can fix it that'd be better.
I have to use discdupe right now on the plextor manager to get cd to cd copies and that is suspect at best. Need to use a temp image to get it to work about 75% of the time. This all started when I changed the read cd-rom. But now any other cd-rom does the same thing. Thanks in advance

I am trying to rattle some cob webs here, so if it isn't the problem you have, I tried. I have the plextor 12/4/32 scsi model. It came with the basic adaptec easycd, directcd, plextor 2000? I also had a full version of easycd creator deluxe 4.0. I remember havinge problems with the dlx version and not being able to copy cd to cd (image to cd since I only have the cdrw and no cdrom). I can't remember if when updating dlx it wouldn't find the cd drive or if I updated dlx trying to make it work. Either way I uninstalled the dlx version and used what came with the drive. I would try updating easycd first (if you haven't already). It was quite a few months ago when this problem happened to me so maybe there is an update. Otherwise join the crowd going to nero!
