Here in Michigan, we can renew all are plates and registration online via the Secretary of States website. It's really cool. (Plus, we usually don't have to pay more than $100.) No line waiting, they mail everything within a week. Would be really cool if you could print your own stuff.

print our own stickers?... ehh doubt it
but that sounds sweet as heck... Does anyone know if I could do that for California? If not, it's time to get out the ol' pen and paper and write a letter to Congress (or whoever I should write to)

Dang, in Oregon, we just get a notice in the mail. Only costs $28 to renew ever two years. New reg only costs $48. Sounds like you need to change locations Crazy!

California is a bit funky.

You have to pay your fees (mine were about $150 on a $10k car value) BUT you get 67% of the Fee part back in a few weeks. This was about $48.

I asked why they didn't just reduce the price to begin with and they said it would be too logical (this has been going on for a year or so).

Don't worry Ohio is just as screwed up. Last night my father and I went to transfer the title of my car into my name from his. OK $7.00 for the title transfer. There was no sale price for the car. No problem and we head next door because I now need new plates for it, which were just renewed in december of 2000. My county is under EPA's watch so I have to have emissions check every other year. Well the car is a 1993 and was last tested in nov. of 1999 and would again be due nov. 2001. NOT. As soon as the registration changes you have to chave an E-check done at $19.95. So now tonight I have to leave work early AGAIN to have the testing done, then I get to go get new plates. I was going to get a new driver's license since I have moved. Cost $17.xx plus since mine expires july of next year I will have to get another one then. WTF!!@#* Screw it I am not getting a new one. She said when I get new plates she can update my name in the system for free. How much more screwed up can it get. Wish me luck on the emission check, considering the car has 135000 miles and its a Chevrolet Lumina Euro! At least it is paid for :( If the same bit&* gives me an attitude again I am going to shove the plates up he rather large nasty looking...

That just happened to my brother for the same month.
Funny how things are just forgotten about.

In california you get your stickers when you pay the registration fee.

This was kind of funny.... When I moved here from Virginia an bought a car out here, the licensee plate came to me in the mail. I looked at it and even tried to check if there were two or not. Then placed it on the back, it appeared to be only one. Two years later I got a verbal warning from a cop because I didn't have a front plate. At that time I thought I might have messed up, so I checked my rear plate again to see if there were two but only saw one. This year (four years total) I hear the fine for having only one plate went up to $500 or something because of the ticket cameras. I went out to my car again, took off the rear plate and threw it against the ground several times... what do you know, there were two plates there!!

lipsons, that's hilarious.

In California, it is possible to renew your registration via the DMV website. I think it's even possible to renew your license if you qualify via web. Not too sure about that though.

Well it passed the emissions test with flying colors. But since my b-day is in july I could only get plates until then and will the have to renew. I was supposedly pro-rated the amount ($17.50) for what 3 months, then I have to renew them. And they wonder why the government has so much debt!
