View Full Version : Power button with asus p3v4x

04-19-2001, 12:30 AM
I have an asus p3v4x and i have set it up so that i can turn on the computer when i press the space bar. i also noticed that when i used to turn off the computer, the num lock light remained on. for the last few days my computer has not been responding to the space bar and the light on the keyboard doesnt stay on anymore. this isnt really a big thing, but i would like to know why it doesnt work any more.
as far as changes ive made to the system in the last few days are:
-flashed bios to version 1005.
-formatted c drive
-got rid of winme and went back to win98se

i didnt notice exactly when it stopped working, but i think it was after i flashed the bios and before i wiped out winme. i havent made any hardware changes. any ideas?

Are those options in the bios? (To have the space bar turn on the computer) If you did a flash then you need to set it up again.

it is an option in the bios and i had it set up last week to start the computer this way. it shouldnt have anything to do with the os, and if it does, then i know it works with win98se, winme and win2k because i have set it up before with all of them. i have also changed the settings almost 10 times. you have the option to use the space bar, control+esc key or a keyboard power key. since i dont have a power key on my keyboard, i have set it up on different occasions with the space bar, ctl+esc and none. neither configuration has worked. the only way to turn it on is to use the regular atx power button. there is also an option to use a ps2 mouse to turn on the computer which i havent tried because i dont have a ps2 mouse around the house. but when you highlight that option on the screen it says that this only works if your atx +5v power supply is compatable (or something similar). it may be that the power supply is not giving enough juice to the comp to start it. there are also 2 lights that stay on always, the num lock light and a green led on the mobo. since im too lazy to take apart the case right now (i will this weekend), i can only assume that that light doesnt stay on always like the num lock used to. when i used to take apart my case all the time, i noticed that a few seconds after i pulled out the cord from the power supply, both of the lights would go off, but as long as there was power going to the computer, both lights would stay on. i have no idea what it could be.

I tried to do the wake with KB thing, but it never seemed to work right. I prolly didn't set it up in the bios correctly. Anyway, if you think it's a bios thing I can get you the 1006beta bios. When I bought my Mobo, that's the bios that was installed (last January).

Tommy: Did you install the Memory Interlace Enabler? It's really cool. It's a feature that VIA developed but Asus didn't turn on in the bios. It speeds up your mem.

If you're interested, its on VIA's site. (I lost the direct link-sorry)

I installed it... and it could be just placebo-effect, but it really seems to move faster between apps, etc. Enough to notice.

Bires, i think it is a bios thing, but im not 100% sure. from what you posted, its seems possible that asus disabled the functionality of any keyboard power up. i got my mobo with 1000 or 1001 bios and when i upped to 1003 it still worked fine. but when i upped to 1005 it stopped working. if you could send me the 1006 beta, that would be great.

by the way, i have installed the memory interlace enabler, but i havent noticed much of a differene in sandra. i only have one stick of 128 mb ram so i believe that is the cause. i plan on putting in the pc100 64mb from best buy found in the deals forum cuz im kinda short on funds right now.

I'll run the AFLASH tonight, copy the bios, and attach the bios file to an email. Because it's a beta bios, install at your own risk (yada yada yada...), but I've had no problems with it and my comp runs sooooo nice!

Also, In Sandra, I get about 350 (whatever points they use in the memory benchmarks) with 2X interleaving (default) and about 450 with 4X enabled. My raw data is at home, but that's about the numbers I remember from benchmarking.

One side note: Take a serious look at case cooling. I got over 5MHz (ocing)from my AIW from just removing hotspots near the AGP and SLOT1.

note to self: get bios for TommyBoom

Got it back up and running just fine. still no space bar boot up, but thats not a big deal. thanks for the beta bios Bires. im gonna keep it running as is unless i run into some major problems, but i doubt that will happen especially since we both have a similar setup. of course mine isnt overclocked. just for curiosity i might load an earlier bios just to see if that fixes the power up situation

(I hope I helped)
Anyway, I'm a little surprised that Asus hasn't made 1006 a release yet-runs great for me. When I get some time, I'll try the space-bar boot-up thing again...now I'm kinda curious.

thanks for the beta, works great. i still cant get the keyboard power up to work. i think asus has disabled the option in the bios and not removed it from the menu. maybe if you can get a hold of one of the older bios's such as 1003 or under it might be better.

just out of curiosity i checked out the bios update page at http://www.asus.com/products/motherboard/bios_slot1.html#p3v4x
cut and paste:

P3V4X (6 PCI, 1 ISA, 1 AGP, AGP 4X, 2GB SDRAM, PC Health Monitoring)
- BIOS Upgrade and Road Map :

p3v4x105.zip
P3V4X BIOS Release Ver. 1005 06/15/2000
Change the method for detecting different clock chip.
Change CMOS default year to AC 2000.
p3v4x103.zip
P3V4X BIOS Release Ver. 1003 03/15/2000
Remove Set off APM Mode 1.0 checking, fix Win2000 APM cannot shutdown.
Set "AGP Fast Write" option default value to disabled.
Add the new menu item "AGP Fast Write". [quote]

in the 1003 it says the they removed set off apm mode 1.0 checking. this might be the culprit. so you might want to try a bios before 1003. if you dont want to, i will be more than willing to try it out and tell you what i get. i havent been able to get a hold of this yet, if anyone knows where i can get a hold of it that would be great.
