I bought barebone kit #5 from vitality.... when it got to my house.. the stupid CPU fan had clipped off.. and was just juggling in the case the entire trip....

everything was stained with that white gunk.... i ended up cleaning it up and testing the computer... after some mild BIOS configuration problems .. i got the damn thing to work...

it has an duron 750 CPU.... with a duron fan..

my problem is that after a couple of hours of usage.. there is a LOUD ANNOYING sound that comes out of the damn motherboard!! it SOUNDS like a fan when you have something lodged in it.. so it can't move properly... but there are only three fans in the damn computer...

one is the power supply fan... which doesn't seem to be the one making the noise.. the other is obviously the CPU FAN... but i can SEE that there is nothing lodged into it... no wire .. or anything like that...

the last fan is in my removable hard drive bay.... but it doesn't seem to be that.. because the nooise comes from the INSIDE.. not the outside......

also.. when I shut down the computer... the noise stops and the CPU fan still keeps on going for a couple of seconds.. so it DEFINATLY can't be that...

what the HELL could be making this noise if it isn't a fan?

My guess is that your CPU fan is not exactly horizontally aligned (or vertically aligned if you have a slot cpu). Maybe it got jarred during all of that swingin' fun during shipping. When the fan is running at a certain speed, the blades might be contacting the grate of the fan, causing the noise you hear. When you power-down your system, the RPMs of the fan will slowly decrease to zero, lowering the centripetal force experienced by the blades, causing them to "settle" somewhat. I hear this same thing when I first power-up my system from the fan on my 3D Prophet video card, although mine is the opposite case; it only makes the noise during the first minute or so after boot.

I tried moving it around.. and what not...

it turns out to be one of those DUAL fan things .... I even tried loosening the screws a little...

i'm going to try to screw around with it some more..

if it doens't work.. then I am going to ask the people to send me a new one..
