View Full Version : Anybody else like ice hockey?

This past fall, my girlfriend introduced me to ice hockey. Now I had always been a mild fan of watching it on tv, but never really got into it.

We went to a few games and I was hooked. I'm even getting season tickets for next season. If you haven't seen a game in person, you owe it to yourself to go. It's one of the best times I've had in quite a while...

I agree, it's much better in person than on TV.

And the best thing about it... it's only junior hockey out here... 16-20 yr olds. So for a full season ticket package, be it only 36 gms, it's only $400. We dont have an NHL team within 500 miles. Frankly, I think the kids play a little harder then the pros. At least they aren't getting paid 75k a game... more like $75... And it's not hard to get quality tickets either. My team plays in the Rose Garden, and usually, there is around 5-8 thousand people in a 20k capable arena. So you get to pick and choose where you sit, and for $13 a person for a nights entertainment, how can you beat that?

I'm a blues fan, myself.

They've gone to the playoffs a record 22 (or 23?) consecutive seasons, and have never won the cup. They should have at least gone to the finals last year, but the Sharks bit us in the ass. Now it's vengence time, but I don't think we've got enough steam to beat the Av's(who I'm sure will make it that far). Poor Demitra hasn't been the same since his eye injury...

Go Blues

BTW, anyone know the rankings and standings currently?

GO KINGS!!!

I attended the game on wednesday night where they came back down by 3 goals. It WAS the GREATEST GAME i've EVER attended!!!
I've been playing 11 years strong, a native californian...yes, i'm an odd one. The oddest thing of all is that i'm ASIAN. hehe.

Anyway, HOCKEY IS THE GREATEST SPORT TO PLAY! People who critique and have never played have no right to even say crap about it. It is the purest sport still around with traditions still kept sacred. Money is slowly penetrating that sacred-ness, but it is still the most SACRED sport.

HOCKEY RULES!!!

Hockey is completely badass, espcially when the playoffs roll around. I've been to 3 ECHL (one of the minor leagues) and 3 NHL games, and its always fun. The only thing is that if you don't have a connection, and actually have to pay for the tickets, the NHL games can be a little pricey. But its worth it. And it is much better than watching it on TV. If you don't have a team in your area, ROAD TRIP.

GO RANGERS!

Wait, I forgot, the Rangers SUCKED @$$ this year.:bawl: Another depressing season for the followers of the Blueshirts. Damnit.:bawl: But I still love 'em.

GO STARS!

There is nothing, NOTHING, like playoff hockey. Sure, I'm Canadian, it's a national decree that the country stops during the playoffs, but seriously, the Edmonton-Dallas series this year is so exemplary of what hockey is all about: skill, speed, and toughness.

You know what I love about hockey players? They don't go for this pansy "oh, I got my teeth knocked out, so I can't play" BS. Call it lunacy, call it stupidity, but there's nothing that wins fans' hearts like playing through an injury. And by virtue of what playoff hockey is, EVERYONE'S got an injury!

You really have to watch that Oilers-Stars series. That, along with that ridiculous Kings-Wings game where they scored twice with no goalie, has rekindled my love for hockey.

$400 is cheap?!? Clippers season tickets last year were $410 for a pair! 2 tickets for the same price. and since no one shows up, you pick and choose your seat as well

I'm not even gonna get into it about the Blazers... what a disgrace. Honestly though, I find hockey way more fun to go to on a weekly basis then basketball games. I think BBall players are way overpaid and too childish. Look at Rasheed Wallace. Sure, the guys got a competitve fire, but sheesh, anybody can keep their mouth shut.

How 'bout them Sabres?

EIGHT - NOTHIN.

To close out the series against the Flyers 4-2. Maybe a healthy Primeau or Lindros would have made the difference, but the goaltending looked absolutely minor league yesterday. Letting in 21 goals I think ranks the team dead last.

Awwwwww yeah, the Stars are victorious again. What a great game. The Stars never got flustered, they just kept waiting for their time. Great series, but I'm glad it's over. That makes four years straight now that we've been showing those Canadians how to play hockey.

And what the hell happened to the Flyers? I mean, I can understand losing to the Sabres, they're a decent team. But 8-0? What a tank job! Way to mail that one in, Philly. Enjoy the offseason!!

Wow, it seems that I have touched a nerve........

Wait, let me guess, the next American in your sights is Derian Hatcher.

Us Americans think we're the best at everything, didn't you know eh? J/K.

All I have to say is that Modano & Company are still playing hockey, while the Oilers are all working on their golf games right about now. Wait, do they play golf in Canada?

I call the Got|Apexer's to stand in solidarity with me. Just in case I need to remind you, some of those Canadians are French.

Have you ever actually watched a Soccer game or played in one? It's Hockey, on grass. Just as rough I assure you, with NO pads. Those guys run for 45 minutes straight, no breaks, no subs, no anything.

And that, my friends, is why I played Goalie for all those years. :D

Yes, Hartford moved to Carolina a few years back.

and as for soccer, they don't run for 45 minutes. The run for maybe 20 of them, the rest of the time they walk around and rest and chat with their opponents. They don't move as much until the ball at least comes in the zone.

In hockey you don't have that luxury, because the puck moves quite a bit quicker and the rink is a lot smaller.

OK, it's time to clear the air here. I'm a bigger fan of footy (what you call soccer) than I am of hockey, so I can't let this forum go without standing up for my sport.

sbp, I assure you that footy is not for, ummm, kitty cats. I could tell you stories about injuries that people have suffered playing footy that would make Joe Theisman's leg look like a paper cut. There may be more overall contact in American football, but the contact that does occur in footy can be severe, and footy players don't get to use all of those pads either. They get a little piece of plastic over their shins, that's all.

Mighty Man is right, footy players don't run the whole 45 minutes, but that's only half of a match (a match is 90 minutes plus extra time). He's pretty close with his figure. I might put it at 25 minutes of running. However, the playing field for footy is MUCH larger than a hockey rink. A teams best hockey player may log 35 minutes of ice time, with two intermission breaks inbetween, whereas footy players will put in 50+ minutes of effort with only one break inbetween.

Sorry for the rant, but I get tired of people bashing footy. I would invite all of you who think footy is a soft sport to go play a real, competitive match. And when you're done, and you've taken a few size 11's to your knees and ankles, and your legs look like ground beef, don't come crying to me.

And never mind the fact that it takes more intestinal fortitude to play rugby than all of these other sports put together.....

I played field hockey for years and years (it's played by guys in other countries, before all you ig'nint 'Mericans get your teasin' hats on). It's played on a soccer-sized field, and is basically soccer if not for the flying clubs and harder ball. I will say this: I never ever felt tired after a field hockey game. It was stand around, stand around, play a little defense, sprint a few times a half, and then prowl around some more. Ridiculous. And I was good. The shitty players walked even more!

As for Edmonton being Canadian and Dallas being American, Dallas is no more American than the Blue Jays or Expos are Canadian. The fact of the matter is, there are more Canadian born n' raised playing in the playoffs than all the other guys put together. So there! :P

Ah, who the hell cares. If you want a real man's sport, go play rugby.

OK, first off. Field hockey is not, NOT, I repeat, NOT footy. I have played field hockey before, and all you have to worry about is that ball whizzing around and someone going nuts on your leg with that stick. You're comparing apples and oranges there.

And if Canadians are such great hockey players, why do the Czech's keep winning all of the international competitions, i.e. 2000 world championship, '98 Olympics, etc. Come to think of it, Canada hasn't won a senior level competition since the 1997 World Championships.

Finally, in re: your rugby comment - see my last post.

Ahh, don't mind sbp, he's a little insecure when it comes to things like national pride and manly contact, hehe.

I played soccer for ten years, and coached kids leagues for a couple, and I assure you it is no sport for "pussies."

Someone summed up the rigors of playing soccer like this (to paraphrase): "First, have a friend stand about 30 yards downfield from you. Now run toward your friend as fast as you can as if you were going to pass by him. Then, as you pass by, running at top speed, have your friend lower his shoulder out in front of you, or his hip, as if he were positioning himself between you and the imaginary ball you would normally be running down the wing with. Or even better, have your friend slide under you and take your legs out from underneath you, or step on your ankle. See how far you fly in the air. See how hard you hit the ground afterward, and how scraped up and roughed up you get as you slide and roll to an unglorious heap. That is soccer, and its not for pussies."

Back to the topic at hand, I really enjoy hockey, but unfortunately have been an Islanders fan since the days of Bossy, Sutter, Potvin, and Trottier. Haven't had a whole lot to cheer about in oh, say, 15 years!

Thanks zenbooty, for that VERY ACCURATE(Trust me - Like zenbooty, I speak from experience) portrayal of footy, properly known around the world as "The Beautiful Game."

As for "The Mess" - he sure isn't what he used to be. But I will never forget back in '94 in the Conference Finals against the Scumbags......um,errrr....I mean, the Devils. We (the Rangers, of course) were down in the series 3-2. Mess guarantees a victory, then scores a hat trick to beat the Devils and win the series. The rest, as they say, is history.....

Ahhhh, how I long for the days when the Rangers didn't SUCK.

That was a very cool series. The last game was "tight", as the kids like to say. Great win by the Kings, go home "Hockeytown". I fuckin' hate that name. No city in the States should have the fucking audacity to call itself "Hockeytown". That should be reserved for some podunk hamlet in nothern Saskatchewan where people don't even work, they just play hockey. F Detriot, I'm glad they won. last night i played my first game of organized soccer. i used to make fun of soccer players in high school when i was on the football team. all those shin guards and short shorts. prancing around, kickin each other in the balls.. sheesh

welp, i damn near lost my cookies several times last night. it's a co-ed team, which means at least 5 girls on field. we had exactly 5 girls with two guys to sub for the entire game (that's 90 minutes fellas).

there's no coasting in soccer, especially the beehive soccer we tend to play on my team. you jog, then you sprint 50-60 yards, then you jog, then you sprint again. it's an offensive tackle's worst nightmare. (i know that - i played tackle when i weighed 230lbs in high school football). will you ever see a 230lb person playing soccer? maybe as a ref..

now as for hockey, it still remains my favorite sport. always has been, always will. ice hockey's expensive and geographically a pain in the ass, but any other form of hockey is just as fun. i just wish more people liked it, maybe then i could put my lungs back in my chest where they belong and hang up my shin guards and short shorts.

oh, and go flyers! (sniff, sniff)

Rumor has it that there will be a sequel to Slapshot sometime within the next 18 months. Apparently the Hanson brothers will be in it as well (though I seriously doubt Paul Newman...it would be too....Gordie Howe-esque).

Woohoo! That's some wonderful news. Man I love that movie. I think Newman's a little too old to fill that role again - he should stick to salad dressings.
