Techbargains listed some deals for different TIVO's today. Does anyone know if you can use TIVO's without a monthly subscription? I don't mean bootlegging their service, just using it like a VCR... programming it yourself?

Yes, TiVo will work without subscribing to the service. You do loose alot of functionality but you can still do everything you can do with a VCR and more.
