Endorsement - Proliants are among the best servers in the world - even slow-ass 200Mhz. Back in the 200Mhz day, a fully loaded Proliant 5500 could run you $25k. Turn this guy on, and it'll run literally for years without powering down.

Warning - This one ships without any hard drives. Compaq hot swap drives that fit in here cost about $400-500 for a 9GB drive. A 2nd processor kit, if you can find one for this beast, would probably cost more than the server.

The good news is that a lot of Proliant stuff sells on eBay.

Forgive my ignorance about servers, could standard hard drives work in here? I would assume they would need to be scsi?

Correct. You cannot use IDE/EIDE drives in this beast. Nor would you want to. I have three of the Proliant 3000s that've been running non-stop for three years now. Good product.

I think this has either one or two on board scsi cards. If you want to go with the hot-swappable HD's in a RAID 5 config, you need to pick up the SMART 2DH SCSI array controller they mention in the options section. That by it self will be in the $1200-1500 range, unless you can pick one up on EBay.
