I wasn't in a coma. I just didn't know about this before. Either that or I've been drunk for a very long time.

Nothing personal, rum. It's just that when PayPal started a year and a half ago, they offered $10 for every referral that signed up. That sparked the largest firestorm of referral madness the internet had ever seen. Everywhere you looked, people were posting messages begging you to sign up under them.

I, and others, were happy to see PayPal tighten up their referral policies, which made the referral messages subside.

So, when we see a subject line like "$5 free from paypal.com", it brings back unfavorable memories of "referral madness"!
