When it comes to buying movies on DVD, I am not the biggest fan of bootleged copies. Even if they're cheaper, I'd rather spend the extra bucks for an official release, even if it means waiting months for it. However, when it comes to movies that are probably never gonna be released EVER (some anime, certain Jackie chan movies, for example), bootlegged DVDs are a heaven sent. So I'm thinking of purchasing some Hong Kong Bootleg Anime DVDs on eBay. But I'm worried of the quality. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they aren't. Last time I ordered a bootleg Akira DVD, the video quality was pretty good for a bootleg, but the English subtitles were pretty much All Your Base... (and now I find out they're releasing Akira on DVD in the US anyways)

SO, I'm wondering does anybody know any site where they actually review bootlegged DVDs? I'd like to get some info (video/audio quality, do the subtitles make sense?) on them before I order.

p.s. check this cover out. Apparently a $1million restoration is in progress and it's gonna be released on DVD in the US in a couple months. Now that's a cool cover!!

Oh, I just found out that they're actually showing the remastered version in theatres. Here in San Francisco, you can watch it at the AMC 1000 Van Ness Theatre. I'll be headed over there soon. I think it's also showing in LA. Check out your movie listings.

from thedigitalbits.com

"Well... we knew it was coming - Pioneer said so. And now we have details on their new 2-disc Akira: Special Edition. Expected to street on July 24th, the set will be THX-certified and will include featurettes on the making of the film, the soundtrack, the restoration and more. 75,000 copies of the disc will be packaged in a limited edition collector's tin. Once they're gone, the special edition will still be available but only in regular DVD packaging. A single-disc regular edition will also be produced. You can read more about the set over at ICv2.com. Meanwhile, here's a look at the tin..."
