Actually it's become quite a sport from what I hear. It's very popular in a lot of areas around the country and is played a lot like paintball.

i buy them,

but beware if you order these guns they get either confiscated by customs since their coming from overseas.

SInce US laws are getting tighter with airsoft guns its going to be hard to get an airsoft with full trade marks and original condition with no orange/red/yellow paint on the barrel

Airsoft is the next best thing to paintball, although paintball can be an expensive hobby, so is airsoft sport.
Airsoft guns are use in FBI training and other various law enforcement agencies.

While there was a brief controversey that paintball promoted violence its been a very well upcoming sport, and with laws that prevents some states from having airsoft sport their its up to the ppl responsibility to take airsoft serious and not like go rob a bank or point it an officer ...

airsoft guns are an identical 1:1 replica of the real steel.
almost same weight and feel..

as to the person above..who said who buys these guns? airsoft enthusiast or pure collectors..ever thought about owning a PSG-1 or MP5 yeah mp5 goes for like 1000 and psg-1 go for around the same area..but even that only special tactics and law enforcement can get then...but for the airsoft enthusiast its around 250 but you can upgrade to full metal body eheh...

just my 2 cents

I won't claim to be an airsoft expert; I'm just a humble firearms afficionado, certified firearms instructor, and lawyer with an interest in firearms law. But such being the case, I'd like to dispell the notion that seems to be implied in a couple of places in this thread ("I always wanted an MP5.. but knew i could never have one," and "mp5 goes for like 1000 ... but even that only special tactics and law enforcement can get them") that "ordinary folks" can't own fully automatic weapons like, for example, an MP5.

In fact, in most states it's perfectly legal to own such a firearm. Basically, assuming one lives in such a state, and is not prohibited from owning a firearm due to age, criminal history, etc., the most common procedure is to find a gun that was on the civilian registry prior to the 1986 cut-off date, fill out some paperwork, obtain a qualifying signature (usually, but not invariably, that of your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer), wait around for the paperwork to be approved, and pay $200 for a tax stamp.

(I don't actually know how many MP5's are transferable, and I'm simply assuming that some were registered prior to the '86 cut-off date. If not, legal ownership of an MP5 becomes much more difficult.)

Prices on machine guns tend to be quite high, since the 1986 ban artificially limited supply, while demand remains strong. And by "quite high" I'm talking several thousand dollars for most models. But there you have it. And a nice machine gun is still less expensive than a nice motorcycle or a nice swimming pool, so it's not like it's beyond the financial reach of a large percentage of people.

If you want a fuller discussion, I would recommend checking out James Bardwell's excellent FAQ on NFA weapons, which may be found at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/wbardwel/public/nfalist/nfa_faq.txt

(And just for the record, despite machine gun ownership being legal in most states, it's my understanding that there has been a grand total of precisely 1 instance of a legally owned machine gun being used in the commission of a violent felony in the United States, since the NFA went into effect in 1934.)(Moreover, since this is the "Got Deals?" forum, and not the "Let's Talk About Guns" forum, we should probably take any extended firearms discussion to private email.)

On a related topic. Dianne Feinstein is looking to ban .50BMG Rifles because they are too dangerous and could be horrible in the hands of a criminal. Nevermind the fact that .50 caliber rifles are around $5,000 a pop for single shot models. The scope is another $5-$6,000. Number of times used in a crime in the US? Zero.. Okay, I'm done ranting.

Noooooo... Since poisoning ground squirrels has been almost banned as well, the coyote population has exploded, the cows are breaking their legs in the squirrel holes, the Pheasant population has disappeared. I need that .50BMG sniper for droppin the critters at 3,000 yards (works up to 2 feet down the hole too).

Dianne.. do something useful, like re-regulating the energy theives before we all go bankrupt in CA.

Since we are on the subject of airguns.. Daisy does own the rights to this one:

err, I've seen BBs go through a friend's hand. You folks shoot each other for fun? Or are these AirSoft fellers less powerful than, say, a 20-pump Crossman?

Sup, me and my friends play airsoft and its pretty much the same like paintball but with out the paint. You can buy special bb's which are like paintball's but it doesn't seem too effective when me and my friends tried it. The pain is the same as paintballs also, but just the pellets dont break. We all got spring pistols and it is pretty fun. It isn't that strong compared to the gas powered airsofts. I got shot in the eye once, and man did it hurt, i wasn't wearing goggles or a mask so, if you do start to play, get some goggles, its dangerous, i could had went blind... If you are looking for cheaper airsoft, this site is cheaper than the one mentioned above. http://www.jungletoy.com also http://www.tapco.com has the mini electric airsofts, they are weaker, but its pretty neat. have fun and dont shoot your eye out haha...

Airsoft Guns are a great way of getting a replica of gun you always wanted, but either can't afford, or can't legally purchase. You can even buy airsoft guns with silencers, something that has been illegal for a long time. Mike7 does have a point though, about the ability to acquire these guns legally. I found that out a while ago and am in the process of trying to purchase an item.

SpiNtEEwS, I almost lost my eye too! When I was in HS (6 years ago), before we could afford paintball guns, we used slingshots with paintballs. We figured that since slingshots dont shot nearly as hard as a real paintball gun, we'd be fine without goggles. WRONG!!! My buddy shot me in the eye from about 20 feet away, and I had the biggest, fattest and most ugly welt less than an inch from my eye. I seriously thought I went blind right when it happened, I couldnt see anything for a couple minutes. I wiped my eye, and thought I was bleeding like crazy, turned out to be just the paint, but damn, that was scary. Dont every play without goggles, we learned our lesson.

BTW: My friend let me shoot him in the ass a couple of times to get even, I guess he thought i wouldnt take it...hehehe I used my friends gun (after I tightned the bolt) and gave him some memorable welts

NullUnit2000, good find, but I think those replicas have the bright orange tips for cops to know it's not a real gun. I have no problem with it, but I think people want unmarked replicas.

As for Airsoft as a sport, you've gotta be crazy. I got shot in the foot by a Crossman pump (12 pumps max i think) bb/pellet gun about 4 years ago and it hurt like HELL! It drew blood and left an amazing mark. I wouldn't step in front of a bb gun ever. That was just my foot, i can't imagine getting shot in a more sensitive place (if you know what i mean...).

I'll stick to shooting at cans, birds, squirrels, etc....

Another thought, with all the school shooting madness, I think as responsible adults, we shouldn't encourage guns. Young people these days have shown that they cannot be trusted with firearms. I think the same applies to airguns. I own an airgun and enjoy it responsibly, so don't think i have a vendetta against gun owners. Just my 2 cents. Good discussion though.
