Going to upgrade to a new NT4 server.. best way to transfer files?

Hi all,

I have another question.

we have a new Dell server on it's way to replace our old junky server.

What would be the best way to get all our data from our D; drive over to the new server? There's all kinds of folders such as mail (for all the .pst files), profiles, everyone's own individual space on the server, etc.

Here's the idea i have, Use a cross over cable to connect the 2 servers and just copy and paste.. will this work? How about permissions?? will they be retained or lost?

or can i make the new server act like it's just another workstation, let it pull a IP from the dhcp and transfer the files?


any input would be appreciated.

if you want to retain all the properties you could always just switch the hard drives and reinstall the OS. It would keep all the files as they were and setup the correct drivers.

WEll that would be pretty optimal to do, but those drives are pretty tired, and they aren't that big..

the new server has 2 18 gig scsi 10k's in there.

Dell had a promotion to double the harddrive for free.

What kind of server is your old junky server? Earlier NT? Netware? Windoze 95 box acting as file server?
You could pull the old drives out, put them in the new server (along with the new drives, of course), then do a copy/paste that way. Much quicker than over the wire.

Uhhhh - it's a server... put them on the same network & copy the files over. Assign it a static address, don't ever assign a server a DHCP address.

so once i get the data over, all i need to do is copy this reg key over and viola? this sounds too easy..??


Just need to figure out how to move the data, giving it a static IP and moving pasting everything over sounds good.

The old server we outgrew a while back is a p 200, 64 mb, 4 gig hd..

finally a new server!
