I have just installed Windows 2000 Professional, and I am getting a combination of freezing and error messages. Re-installing does not help, this is not a hardware issue. (Only happens with Win2k) The application Logs generated state "WMI ADAP was unable to load the Perfctrs.dll performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0." There is also another application log that is generated that states " Unable to read IO control information from NBT device." (Perfctrs.dll is the title) I am guessing that this perfctrs.dll is kaput, but I don't know what to do about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This was a clean install, and it is on an MSI kt266 Motherboard, with an AMD Athlon T-Bird 1200c Mhz cpu, and 256Mb DDR Ram. I am not overclocking it, and the initial errors have disappeared, but have been replaced now with "The device , \Device\Scsi\viadsk2, did not respond within the timeout period. " I don't have any Scsi devices in this system, so I don't know where this is coming from.

I also have an ASUS V7700 GeForce2 32 Mb DDR video card, and Windows 2000 Professionalis the only OS that I could get the drivers for this card to work on, and even those weren't the ones shipped with the card itself. (I downloaded an older version) I also have a creative soundblaster Platinum 5.1 sound card installed, but these 2 items are working beautifully.

Do you have Zip, LS-120, Scanners or anything else you can think of? Sometimes, they are associated with "scsi" even if they are USB, or parallel.

Have you installed the motherboard drivers/utilities? sometimes we do this the first time we build systems and then when we rebuild or upgrade we forget and wonder why it doesn't work. Just some thoughts.

Good luck,

I do have this USB Host to Host bridge that doesn't have any drivers installed because I can't find any for them. (Perhaps I should look at the M\B cd) Would this cause a timeout error though? I'll try to find some drivers for this and see if that works.

Well, I did find some drivers for the USB Host to Host bridge, but that didn't help any. All and every attempt at downloading Service pack 1 have failed miserably, causing the system to freeze up. I have tried absolutly everything and it has been all to no avail. I am going to wipe everything and never install Windows 2000 ever again. Stable my ass.

bummer!

Does the computer have a connected NIC? Win2k may be looking for a connection, causing the "time-out".

Did you go through the steps outlined in the post to Microsoft I gave? It sure did sound like the problem you are having.

I have Win2K on a partition and didn't have any problems installing it on my K6 200MHz. Don't use it much though, since my internet sharing software only works with win9x and boy, not a day goes by that win98 doesn't crash!

Better luck to you with the new install. Let us know if you find a solution. It will be strange if it works the second time since you haven't changed anything. Good luck, nonetheless.

I haven't re-installed yet, as I thought I'd best sleep on it before I did anything else. Did you re-install Win2k from dos, or just run it? It sounds like exactly what my problem is, and I have gotten rid of a PILE of the error messages I was receiving, narrowing it down to one stickler, this \Device\Scsi\viadsk2 not responding within the timeout period. I can't install most programs right now, but the ones I have installed are, for the most part working. (No worse than what I could expect from Windows 98)

The VIA 4 in 1 drivers 4.26-4.28 has SCSI detection issues for IDE drives/devices.

It will basically come up and say they are SCSI.

goto http://www.viahardware.com and hit 4 in 1 drivers on the right and pick up new mobo drivers.

good luck

EEEUUUUUURRRRREEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKAAAAAA!!!!!!

A combination of the Via 4-in-1 drivers and disabling the write cache on my hard drive has resolved all of my issues!! Thanks alot for all the help guys!! I'm positive I would have taken a sledge hammer to this thing pretty soon!! =)

do you have a raid chipset? that does show up as a scsi device on win2k

also if you install the via 4 in one drivers it might show up as a scsi device in your device manager.

can you post scree shots of your device manager disk controller section?

cheers,

also I dont know if you have had any problems with jerky DVD playback...

I had problems of that sort and discovered that DMA could only be enabled on the primary master.

are the controllers showing up as scsi devices?
cause it makes a difference in your ability to enable/disable fetures like DMA or sync data transfer et. al.

....I KNOW he said it was fixed...

but the cd(dvd) drives do work fine if recognised as scsi devices...

he will just notice the problem when he tries to burn a CDR(W) w/o DMA mode

or watch a DVD.

just trying to offer some precautionary advice...thought it might be more helpful than that reacionary after-he's-fucked-up-half-his-cdr's advice...

chill mate:)

Actually, This only sort of fixed my problems. Since my last post, I have had an innumerate amount of freezing, blue screens, and crashing. The only error message is generated by an automatic reboot, which says a "bugcheck rebooted the system." I have the can of gasoline ready, and a pack of matches. This isn't going to be pretty. I just wish I could figure out why I can't load ANY drivers for my video card on any OS except Win2K. This system is SOOO unstable, that I can't play ANY online games. I had to really tweak everything just to successfully install them. Now I am soo tired of wrestling with this stupid machine, that I might just return it all. (Oh yes, my speakers just blew a circuit too.)

Oh yes, the Via 4-in-1 drivers fixed all the scsi /IDE issues, and everything is reading as it should, so that problem HAS been resolved. Really, the only time I have problems is when I try to play a graphics intensive game. Then everything hits the crapper. So far I am trying to run some stuff without the sound drivers, this may actually be my culprit, as things are going smoothly so far, but I need to test this theory still by installing EQ and seeing what happens. DON'T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT SERVICE PACK 1 EITHER!!! It does nothing but force me to do an emergency repair and uninstall. SP1 is EVIL!!! EVIL EVIL EVIL!!!!!

Oh my god!! I love the Team Anarchy Site! This is exactly what I've been going through, although to tell you guys the truth, after re-installing Win2k AGAIN! I left the sound drivers out, and I haven't had a single problem since. While I intend to test this without sound all week (My speakers shorted out somehow so I can't have sound anyways until the warranty replacements arrive) I have the feeling that this is the nasty little bugger that made my life a nightmare for 3 weeks. I'll keep everyone posted, but I've been playing EQ WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS for 2 days now. (This is something that NEVER happened for more than 10 minutes with the sound drivers installed.)
