View Full Version : Mustang vs. Camaro
ok so it's the age old question. Which is better? In my opinion the mustang is a better car. Though it might not have as much power I think it has better design and quality than it's competitor. And what the heck do you care if you are .5 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile than a camaro? Driving doesn't come along in quarter mile segments.

It does in the world of muscle cars.
I think the Camaro is far superior. Of course, what the hell do I know about either. I've driven the Mustang and I hated it. The sucky one and the GT (which is less sucky). My cousin's Cobra is passable. I just don't get the feeling of driving when I'm in the car for some reason...
And if you're buying a "muscle car".... don't you want it to have more ... muscle?

I haven't driven a Mustang coupe lately, but the convertible sucks. Not enough power to really rock, the handling's not very good (I think the body's not stiff enough), and the seats suck.
My roommate has a 1997 Z28, so I drive a Camaro pretty frequently, and I like it a lot. Lots of power, good clutch pressure (unlike the Mustangs, which was way too light), good seating position (down, not up), and a better engine note. I still don't like the handling because the car's so big and heavy, but that's probably because I love my Porsche. My 944 can't even come close to the Z28 in flat-out 0-60, but I can weave through turns on highway 1 at about twice the speed.
Anyway, I think the Camaro's a much better car, driving-wise, and the new ones look pretty nice despite their imminent demise.

Did you drive a new one? I thought the new ones were pretty nice...even the GT. And there's always little things you can do to boost horsepower. I have yet to really drive a new camaro but I'm not sure how well I like their styling. Plus the interior is made of cheaper materials so won't last as long. Damn this is a hard choice. I need more opinions. Anyone pro mustang?

Yeah... I've driven both the newest model and the one before. The interior looks pretty much the same, if I remember. At least they had that ugly swoopy thingie above the glove compartment.
Both car interiors are cheaply made. I hate 'em both. Too much plastic and cheapy looking crap.
I like the styling of the new Camaro much better than that of the new Mustang. The new Mustang is SO boxy and wedge-like (kind of reminds me of a door stop) with non-functional vents and junk. Looks unbalanced.
And, like Ice said, I too like the exhaust note of the Camaro better.
I think Ford was trying to go for the retro look with the boxy edges. They even got the mag wheels going on that thing. Hmmm.....well any other suggestions of a fun car besides these two that I should take a look at or is there really no good muscle car that is in their price range?

Well, I like both of 'em better than the Trans Am/Firebird. (Is there a 2001 Firebird?) That car just screams West Virginia.
The Mustang and Camaro ARE the pre-eminent, traditional muscle cars. Anything else in that price range will either be Japanese and therefore considered "rice," or more concerned with comfort than speed.
From what you said, it sounds like you like the Mustang better. If that's the case, just buy it! We're giving our opinions, and at least Koala and I prefer the Camaro, but it's obviously your decision. Buy something that you're going to be happy with, not what we're telling you is better.
the mustang definately kicks the gm cars' asses in the looks dept., but handling and power are dependent on a lot of different factors. from the factory the camaro w/ the ls1 engine will kick any ford's ass period. but if you do the aftermarket thing, there are so many products of quality available for a mustange that you can really build a killer car. although, you can go out and get a new corvette for what you would spend on a mustang to make a real driver's car. the seats can get really annoying in the mustang though, that is a big thing to think about even if you dont care about anything besides looks.
What do you mean the seats can get annoying?
If you ask me, the seats in the camaro are VERY uncomfortable. But of course, this is all opinion. I do prefer the Mustang over the Camaro. Mostly because of looks. I usually prefer looks over speed, since I don't race on tracks, and i've gotten enough tickets to deter me from racing on the streets ;)

Camaro all the way how can u pass up a 5.7 engine for a tiny ford? just to say u had a mustang? Camaros are also much more customizeable

But the Camero's sister is better than both the mustang and camero!!!...
TA Firehawk all the way!!!...
AND btw a mustaing is considered a "Family Car" with some insurance company's....
And I have drive'n a '97 Camero, '97 Firebird, and a '97(GT),'01, and '98 Mustangs and The firebird was the most "fun" to drive, even over the GT modle of the wannabe horse....
compared to a lot of other cars, the seats in the mustang suck, that's what i meant above. i dont know how anyone can say that the camaro is more customizable than the mustang, you have your head up your ass. looks can be argued forever, i dont think we'll ever come to a consensus on that, but the camaro does have a better engine option from the manufacturer.

Update on the Mustang being slower than the Camaro:
It's not! (at least, not any more) I just read an article in C+D about the new Cobra, and apparently their claim of 320 hp is actually accurate this time. It equals or betters the Camaro SS now in just about all the important pony-car tests: 0-60, quarter mile, etc. I still think that the Camaro is a better car, but at least when it vanishes the Mustang will still be a reasonable substitute.
By the way, dopey, where are you from? West Virginia? Arkansas? :D The FIREHAWK? With that giant ugly schnoz? I'm sure it's pretty fast, but I'm not sure I want my car snorting Civics for kicks.

I'll take this one. It would be a little bit of an upgrade from my 90 RS. :D

I saw that thing. That's insane - I'm surprised the Camaro body design is sufficient to get those kinds of speeds. Of course, it's still beaten out by a Porsche...

Have you heard of guys dropping 962 engines into 911's? I saw one at the Monterey show a few years ago...it was ridiculous. He had to do some serious body modiciation because the engine was too large for the cramped 911 engine bay, but by all accounts, the thing absolutely screamed.
