well, you know, if you have very imporatnt stuff in there, I recommend hooking up your HD as a secodary HD to a friend's computer (who has a burner) and burn the important info on CDs. After that, you can choose to reformat your computer or try to mess around with it until you fix it

my comp died on me.... i'm writing from my roomates comp.... i can only get windows to load in safe mode... in normal boot all i get is the background plus the mouse... that's it.... and when i crtl+alt+del all that's open is explorer.... i tried uninstalling some of the recent stuff and taking out my sound + monitor + video drivers but still same problem.... i don't want to reformat... so any other suggestions.... please... thanks in advance... gosh it's been a really bad week for me.... sigh... oh wellz... thanks again

hmmm... i've had that problem before... if you can run in safe mode, at least that part is good... try to fiddle with your bios... sometimes, something there could have gotten reset, and when you load into windows, some device drivers (like udma, or uata, not too sure), can make windows freeze or not sucesfully load up... try going to the bios and loading default or setup value..but im not totally sure, just a suggestion.. or you can try removing all unnecessary devices from your computer..physically detaching your s.c., modem, and things you dont need.. just keep in your video card.

Haha, sounds like something that happened to me a while back... Hate to bust your bubble, but if it's the same situation as mine, you'll have to reformat. Try this, however, load in safe mode and run "msconfig". Try messing with the different boot options under Selective Startup. Most of this info can be found on the Microsoft support pages. There's a 10 page article on troubleshooting win 98 startup. Didn't help me, but it might help you. Otherwise, just try to load up with a win 98 boot disk (that i'm SURE you made) and reinstall windows. Something that you recently installed could have changed a system file. Uninstalling the program won't necessarily put back the original file.

Hope this helps. I KNOW how much of a burn it is when you have to format a hd. I've done it 4 times in the last year.

i think you could just reinstall windows from dos and get the functionality of windows back. i would get into safe mode, and then use a utility to create a backup of your registry onto a floppy disk. then, boot into dos mode, and reinstall windows on top of what you already have in there. then, when windows is finished installing, try restoring your registry from the backup you made on the floppy. this will basically put all the files back the way they were originally, but hopefully keep the functionality of all your other programs. but there are too many other options to try before you go and reformat....

First boot in to DOS by pressing F8 at start up and selecting comand prompt. Go to the root directory by using cd/. Then unattrib the system.1st with the command attrib -r -h system.1st. Now you need to unattrib the system.dat file in the Windows directory use the command attrib -r -h c:\windows\system.dat. Then copy system.1st to system.dat and add the attribs back to the files by using a +h and +r instead of a -h and -r. This should but you back to where windows detects your hardware. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR WIN98 CD AND PRODUCT ID before doing this.

That sounds good to me. If it is a hardware problem, then that should fix it. Otherwise, you will need to re-install windows OVER the old Windows. If you don't have a boot disk, just make one from your roommates computer. I have had similar problems before. What I usually do is unhook everything besides video and memory and see if it boots into windows fine. Then keep adding stuff one by one. If it is hardware, you should find your problem.

If this does not work, the most I have ever had to do is delete C:/windows and re-install. Nothing as harsh as reformatitng the drive.

Although, you problem sounds like it is a driver (or possibly add-on program) problem, because of the fact that you can get into safe mode where no drivers are loaded.

start - run - type in sfc in the run comand line from safe mode to check your system files that are corrupt. Write them all down. Go to your friends computer with a floppy and do a find on those files. Copy them on to the floppy disk. Bring floppy back to your computer and run sfc again in safe mode and when it tells you that it has found a corrupt file restore from floppy. Or you can mnaualy overwrite these files by replacing them in their respective directories. I am making a BIG assumption that this a system file issue and not a hardware issue-

i think that we have all had similar computer crash problems; after all, we are the guys who upgrade instead of replace, and that is the basis of all real problems.
