Well, I got the Hyundai monitor that was posted earlier ($299 for a 21", with about 60 in tax/shipping, so I ain't complaining).
The order took 4 days to get here (well, 3 really). So I'm happy, although I could almost swear that the monitor was suposed to come with a 15 pin to BNC cable, instead of a standard monitor cable, but oh well, it works great anywhoo...
I'm pretty happy with them, but this is also the 1st time i've ever bought anything from them as well.

Don't worry... TigerDirect is fine. I got in on the 19" NEC's a month ago and got two of them. One was defective and called them. They shipped me a new one and paid for the shipping back of the defective one. Just be warned that just because they something is "available now" doesn't mean it. Mine were on backorder for 2 weeks and all that time the site still said "available now". I complained to a manager and got my shipping bumped up to overnight for no xtra charge. In the end I was happy with their service and both monitors are great.

thanks for the replies guys. keep them coming - just want to rest assured while i wait for my monitor to come in.
BTW... did you all get the MasterCard $10 rebate with your orders? supposedly it's supposed to show up in your email order confirmation, but it didn't on mine! I reluctantly used a MasterCard just for this purpose.

I called them up and they said the $10 off was supposed to show up in your emai confirmation, mine didn't. They just adjusted the shipping charges by $10 credited and recharged.
Got a tracking number and should arrive either Monday or Tuesday.

Ordered FP1370 Friday, was shipped Saturday. It will take a few days to arrive, but I am optimistic.
The support staff seems well-trained and helpful. I hope I have no problems (knock on wood).

I've ordered from TigerDirect with no problems. I'm surprised by the low rating.
I have one beef - I purchased web hosting from them (at a great price), they sent me one piece of paper in a regular #10 envelope with my "access code" and charged me $11.75 for shipping!!! The postage on the envelope was 33 cents!!!
I guess I knew up front what the shipping would be, so I can only blame myself.

okay, this thing is HUGE... finding a space to store the box was a challenge...
anyway... seems like i need to wean myself off of shadow mask monitors. this is my first aperture grille. what things must i do or settings must i change to get text that looks as clear as i used to have on my previous monitor? i seem to have a slight (2mm) "shadow effect" to the right of text and window edges, plus i have a sort of glowing halo effect on the left side of my desktop. i've tried messing around with convergence, moire reduction, etc, but all these controls are unweildly (sp?). i'm overwhelmed and frustrated with the amount of adjustment that seems to lie ahead of me.

Mine worked fine out of the box. I just had to go to the NEC website download the latest drivers unzip and install.
My card supports the max resolution, but I am running it at only 1792 x 1344. The OSD has a nice auto adjust feature that just needs a little more resizing to get the full edge effect.
Nice Monitor...
I'll try the BNC connectors and USB control tomorrow...
Hopefully I can get the $75 rebate as well...

Did the monitor come with a UPC code? I've never seen a REFURB come boxed with a normal UPC.
I have recieved fp1370 today. 1st impression is that you have so much control over this monitor. i can get it up to 2048x1536 @ 75Hz. very nicely built. The USB control works like a charm. One thing that you have to keep in mind is that this model is FP-1370R(R for Reconditioned) It is reconditioned by NEC. The unit I receieved is manufactured in 2000. It does have a UPC, but I doubt if it will work because it has FP-1370R written all over it.

i'm still having problems with the image ghosting, particularly of text and icons on white or light background. plus the "glow" or "halo effect" on the left side of my desktop.

maybe i just have sensitive eyes, but the image ghosting of text and so forth is a real strain on my vision. and so now i am having a HELL of a CRAPPY time trying to do something about it!
http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=24696
I have a radeon all-in-wonder and I have no ghosting effect what so ever. The only problem I have is running it @ 1600x1200 or above @ 100hz because the card can't really handle it. This monitor look really sweet at the max res. and the text is crisp. When I tried connecting it with the old TNT2 ultra through BNC, I get a terrible ghosting effect. probably what you are seeing. The problem is that I have made the d-sub to bnc myself using an extender cable. According to NEC, poor extender may cause ghosting effect. I don't really connect two PC to one monitor. the BNC is used for DREAMCAST. The display mode is at 640x480@160Hz without any ghosting problem. My suggestion is to try a different cable (the one that comes with the box may be faulty)and a different refresh rate. Right now I am typing this via FP 1370....good luck
tai4ji2x
05-27-2001, 01:27 PM
where to get a quality cable, then? "d-sub" is the regular svga cable, right?
i've already tried 75Hz, 85Hz, and 100Hz. no use.
the cheap extender that I am using is vulnerable to interference for two reason: 1) the wire guage is way too low and is not shielded 2)it does not have any ferite to magnetically sheild it. give or take, the extender that comes with the monitor is supposedly a good one, but yours may be faulty. try another. good luck
tai4ji2x
05-27-2001, 04:41 PM
huh? mine only came with usb cable, regular monitor cable, and power cable.
that regular monitor cable is actually an extender, and it could be bad, find another cable and try to see if it changes anything. u may have misread my post. I have built a d-sub (15 pin) to BNC (RGB HV sync) myself. this did not come with the package, but since the monitor have a d-sub and BNC switch built in, I just take an advantage of it.
tai4ji2x
05-27-2001, 07:46 PM
yeah, i've tried a couple cables already. no difference. all my other monitors are fine with the very same cables. just not the FP1370.

Got my $75 rebate from NEC today!!!
Sweet this had to be one of the best deals this year, besides returning the 2 Cybiko's my houshold got, cashed
in some old $10 off $50 cards and picked up the DC4800 from Walmart for some short change after applying a few Amex gift certs from answering surveys. Hopefully I will get the $100 rebate, I got the only one in the store with 16MB and the correct UPC for the rebate(the rest had a label on it w/ a sharpy scribbling out the UPC and only had a 10MB card).
(Just got email notification that I am getting my $100 rebate from Kodak, a 3M-Pixel camera for $40 not bad...)
Keep a look out for your $75 if you took the chance to send in your rebate...

I checked on the status of my rebate and they said mine was in the system as a valid rebate. I should be getting mine really soon as well. Man, this was SUCH a great deal.
Anyone know if this deal is still around (and where to get it)? (The $75 rebate from NEC that is... I already have the monitor.)
I swore I had the PDF file on my HD, but guess not.
Thanks in Advance.

I got a refurb FP1370 in May for 399 + 75 shipping.
The monitor was all in rainbow colors so I called up NEC support to have it replaced. After some haggling I got them to pick up shipping both ways, but when I got the replacement, while the raibow colors were gone, there was a significant amount of ghosting.
Another replacment, ghosting.
And another, ghosting.
Then they decide to send me a new model (not a refurb) but again, ghosting.
So I tried to get them to send me a Mitsubishi instead. They wouldn't, saying it was probably an incompatibility. So when I returned the last replacement, I had them ship it to their engineer so he can doublecheck that I was telling the truth.
A couple of weeks later, word comes from the engineer that FP1370's have a manufacturing defect that results in ghosting.
They sent me a new Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060U after that, and
IT'S THE BEST MONITOR I HAVE EVER SEEN. Vibrant colors, sharp text, amazing.
I might have spent some 10 hours total talking to different people at the support department, but in the end it was worth the wait.
But, my point was, FP1370 has a manufacturing defect that results in slight ghosting. Very hard on the eyes at resolutions of 1600x1200 or higher, OK at less than that.

TO tai4ji2x:
Call NEC-Mitsubishi support and ask for Mark Thomas. He's the big boss there int the cust support and generally hard person to get hold of, but with any luck he will take your case. Have your case number(s) and tell him that you have had repeated problems with ghosting and that you know of one case that has been resolved when they replaced FP1370 with Mitsubishi 2060U.
With any luck he'll be willing to help.
Aw man, I just check the NEC-Mitsubishi website. The rebate's only good if purchased before 7/31/01. Is there a more current rebate?
Man, I've been on hold for 20 minutes with TigerDirect.com trying to get the $10 back after reading these posts. I hope they'll honor it!

What is the difference between the 2040U and the 2060U?
Yeah, I can vouch for the problems with the NEC FP monitors ghosting. I have a FP950 (19") and it's got minor ghosting but not bad enough to really bother me or have to send it back, I've heard really bad things about the 21+" ones...
I went through two (count em, TWO ghosted images) of the FE950 before they sent me a new model (FE950+ as the 950 was discontinued).
For one thing, the cable is way too long to support the bandwidth required, but this FE950+ is NEARLY perfect at 16x12@75 (and I am VERY picky).
Anyway, it's the last time I buy an NEC monitor... i have nothing against the company; i got satisfactory customer service, but the general concensus is the product is ****e.
I wish I could have gotten what I was paying for, but of course it's always the way.

I so wish I could get in on this deal but I just don't have the money. Right now I'm buying some 36GB 10K RPM Ultra160 Seagate Cheetah's and they aren't cheap! Besides come christmas time I'll probably shell out the money for an 18" LCD monitor. I've noticed that my two current 19" monitors generate a LOT of heat, and I just couldn't imagine how much more a 22" would do, not to mention how much desk space those suckers take up!

You don't have a speaker or some other magnetic device there do you? I've seen that happen before - people calling me complaining that their monitor is screwed up, then I find out they've got cheap unshielded speakers right next to the monitor. Just moving the speakers 6 inches away from the monitor was enough to get rid of the "glow" or "halo effect".
Just a thought.

nope, i have cambridge soundworks microworks speaker cubes. even if they weren't shielded, i also tried moving them several feet away or unplugging their power completely. i also tried on another computer.
as stated above, NEC is now starting to acknowledge a manufacturing defect in the entire FPxxxx line, which causes ghosting and incompatibility with many popular video cards. i just spoke to mark thomas myself on on thursday. he arranged to switch me out for a mitsubishi 2060U as well.

Got the 2040 today - this thing is massive!
The nice thing is that it's only about an inch or two deeper than my old 17", so it sits nicely on the desk.
The quality is amazing - this is an incredible deal. I was just about to buy a refurbished 19" for the same price - glad this one came along!

Would someone please give me a good definintion of ghosting on the FP1370? I'm not sure if it's happening on my unit or not. My old monitor was so bad that even a ghosting monitor would probably look spectacular. One thing that I have noticed is that I have to turn my brightness control ALL THE WAY DOWN or else it's simply too bright. Is the ghosting problem very obvious? Does it simply make the display look a bit fuzzy? Is there a way I can force a "ghosting" image so I can see if it's happening all the time? Thanks!

there's no reliable way of creating text and image ghosting on a troublefree monitor. maybe put a magnet next to the cable, but that might permanently damage something, i dunno.
what it looks like is: with black text on a white background (open up a decent sized word document, for example). if you see a slight "ghost" of the text immediately to the right or left (usually the right) side of every word and every image, you have ghosting. the overall effect makes the viewing blurry and a strain on the eyes.

The main diffrences between the 2040U and 2060U is that:
1. The 2040 has a BNC connector, which is better because a BNC connector has 5 separate connectors for each color(R,G,B), vertical and horizontal inputs. This yields a higher image quality. The 2060 has two 15 pin connectors and supports the same frequency at the highest resolution of 2048X1536@75HZ 5 lower than the 1370 due to the higher bandwidth/dotclock of the 1370 @ 280MHz compared to both the mitsu's having only 240 MHz. There is also a 30 minute warm up time for optimum performance.
2. In the Mitsubishi models you also get USB ports. For 2040U you get a USB-ready self-powered USB hub, 3 downstream ports (one is hidden under the bezel in the front for easy access), 2 upstream ports so you can hook up 2 computers in the back of the monitor. The 2060U has a USB-ready self-powered USB hub with 3 downstream ports, 1 upstream port.
3. The other difference is that the 2060U has a bit smaller footprint at 19.5 x 19.4 x 18.6" where the 2040U is measured at 19.7 x 19.7 x 19.0" while maintaining the same screen size and verticle cable connections so you can put it up flush to a wall.
Here are a few reviews on the 2040:

http://www.gamepc.com/reviews/hardware_review.asp?review=2040u&page=1&mscssid=&tp=
Even our own Darth did a review on it back in 02/00:

Here are reviews for the 2060:

I just started having ghosting images are showing up at the right of the black text and lines are and called for a 2040U exchange instead of the 2060 due to the fact I like BNC connectors and the ability to share the USB items between 2 computers. Thanks Mark
