I dropped back into my local Staples Sunday and while there I talked to the assistant manager. I had bought the WinTV USB by Happauge last Thursday after seeing a post that a forum member had gotten it for $22. Mine rang up at $39.50, I got it anyway and the original poster was going to scan his receipt for me so I could get the price matched. Well he never did send me a scan so I asked the manager if she could rescan the WinTV for me and see if the price had dropped. I explained that I had told friends about my buying it for $39 and they had gone out and got it for $22 and even $5 (I don't know if I believe that poster). The manager said she would be glad to rescan it for me but had to do it with the HAND SCANNER. It seems the register scanners only tell you the price, but the hand scanners tell the rest of the story. After scanning with the hand scanner she said "Oh, I see why. This is an "F" status item." I of course said, "What is "F" status"? She explained that "F" status is discontinued or something that Staples will no longer carry and as such can be sold well below cost because Staples wants them gone. She then said she would have no problem giving me a refund, in fact what she did was give me a second one and refunded me $18.29. So I ended up getting two WinTV USB's for $22. Being the hard core deal hunter that I am I had to ask "By the way, are there any other "F" staus things around here?" She said that a list just came out from corporate on Sunday and that this week all stores would be putting out all F status stuff before the big anniversary sale hits.

So if you are looking for a Staples deal, be sure to ask a salesperson, preferably a dept. manager to check the status with a hand scanner, the managers have the power to reduce prices on anything with this status.

Remember, if you are not polite to them they don't have to be nice to you. It definitely pays to say "Hi" when you see one of the store or dept. managers whenever you are in the store.

I got more than I asked for, and didn't even have the scanned receipt to show her.


On another subject, where is everybody? Seems like the posts are getting fewer every day around here.

actually i've been coming here more now cuz of finals. i just have to procrastinate and this is the best way to do it.

I went to scan the receipt for you and found that my scanner won't scan. I scanned a receipt from the Iomega drive yesterday for another member and noticed that the light didn't turn off, I didn't think about it again until today when I tried for you, but it's a no go. Take your receipt to the store and do what I did, tell the manager that your friend got a better deal on the same thing at another store and ask them to rescan it for you. If you are nice to them you may get the same result I did.

BTW - I saw that you had posted the same request at some other sites, tke96 was going to scan his for me but got sidetracked,he may still scan one for you. I also PM'd Kimwipes for one (she claimed to get hers for $5) but she never even replied to my request

I tried this receipt scanning, printing, and pricematching at my local staples, but they look at me funny. They think we're scamming them from something. One manager came up to us and refused to pricematch. We asked him why and he refused to give us an answer. Does anyone else have this problem?

been to 3 different staples the past two days and only one of them had an OK manager. the other two were complet PRICKS!

A couple of buddys and I went down to staples last night to pick up some anniversary deals that were out on the staples website, and we asked the manager about the F stauts merchandise while he was showing us some products. He totally flipped out! He was going nuts, he basically said that there is no F status stuff and no you cant name your own price, just in a surprise and semi upset tone of voice. He wasnt totally pissed though, it was cool, he started joking around at the end trying to ask us who told us about the f status stuff. he went thru a name of a bunch of his employees and then asked us what university we go to to narrow his list down. It was funny, my friend was debating whether or not to get something and my other friend told him to wait until we got home to check for coupon codes. When the manager heard that he went, "Coupon codes! you must know someone a little higher up." and he snatched the box away from my friend and went thru another list of employees. Good times.

Like I said, it's a secret. But I never said anything about you the customer being able to "name your own price". The store manager has the ability to change the price to move the products that the chain wants cleared out.
Sounds like you had a good time with it though!
