Heads up to all out there considering a laptop from DELL.
I have had my Inspiron 4000 for about 8 weeks now and have had problems with the system being flaky since the first day. It likes to crash at any time without warning. Sometimes it will crash if it is idle! (Which i don't understand). Well I was first told to free up some system resources and to defrag the drive.
I complained and said that it is probably the crappy OS (Win ME) and that I would prefer to install WIn 98se. They said NO WAY and that I was SOL since more than 30 days had passed since my invoice date (which is the day that the system is shipped...but since it takes about a week to ten days to even get it then you only really have about 20 days to return it!)
So they have basically told me that I will have to live with a flaky system unless I can figure it out myself. So the moral of the story is that a name brand and $1500 still doesn't guarentee satisfaction.
And to all those people told me to go for the Dell since they made good computers You were all wrong! The CSR was even rude to me on the phone!
You have been warned about DELL!!

A friend of mine has the 5000 series and there were problems with it but they are willing (but usually a little late on) replacing the motherboard whenever some problem arrises. This happened twice, so maybe the computer is not that great but they do and will repair the computer (sometimes later then wanted). BTW latitudes work better and are more durable, while inspiron has more fun stuff in it. It is bascally the difference b/t the dimension and the optiplex.
I would still go for a Dell system if I don't build one myself (which in the case of laptops i will not do) but Gateways and Toshiba are good too. Compaqs don't work well.....

yes win ME is the problem. They still offer win 98se in their business sales but the home sales guys says that he absolutely cannot even sell me a copy or trade mine. I figured if they have a recovery disk with win 98 and the drivers preloaded then it would be easy to switch.
I'll just have to do it the old fashioned way...
Call Dell, tell them you're going to return their system. The only way you'll keep the system is if they send you a the Win2k software or a Win2k preloaded HD (to swap).
If it doesn't work, hang up and try again. The i4000 works well with 2k. Trust me, I've done 4-5 clean installs of WinME. Win2k runs far better on that machine.

Win2k is great anywhere, and laptops even better... Demand it, try a billion extentions, you will survive...
Funny Story... I used to call Dell (Before Service Tags) to troubleshoot my gateways... Now all these companies are bloated but still... There is always a nice person you can find
