yet another snobbish display of narrow-mindedness....this time by psycho-.
apparently, taiwan is consider so backwater that high speed rails are 'odd' and out of place...
and that's not even considering his (*maybe* relevant) post on how movies filmed in taiwan too are out of place...
this msg re-edited. was drunk and not thinking straight...albeit still appalled :(

I wouldn't exactly called it ignorance
It's called "Metropolitan Rapit Transit" run by the "Tapei Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp.
They have 5 lines with majour transit points at Chunghsiao Fushing, Taipei Main Station, and Hsimen
In regards to the SHINKANSEN (New Trunk Line) system, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC) was a Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession for 30-35 years, and just signed an agreement with the Taiwan Shinkansen Corp, lead mainly by Kawasaki, Hitachi and Mitsubishi. The system cost 13.8 billion USD.
I drive my parents' E280 in Taipei. I go 3 times a year.
Please don't call me ignorant

Dood, I'm too lazy to do that...I'm up in LA right now w/o a decent connection to do research.. :-)
About all the random facts, you just have to know me. I'm filled with random facts. Maybe you can ask Leon about my random-fact knowledge. (All random facts, nothing useful)
But really, my passport shows the travel. 12 of 24 pages already filled up in 2 years + one 5-year multi entry long-stay visas for Taiwan R.O.C.

the fact that you visit taipei 3 times a year makes your comments even less acceptable
would you please explain to the rest of us how 3 times a year led you to believe that a rapid transit system is odd in a big city such as taipei?
well, i guess i will lay off of integratyper with the "who are you" stuff now.
grimani, i see you have done a few posts. however, the only ones i really remember are this one and the "f*ck you leon" thread. so i gotta ask....who are you?

I find it interesting that you like to dish out comments on other people being narrowminded when you refer to females as "chicks".

Another thing, here on the West Coast people aren't offended by "fob" and they refer to themselves as such. I'm sorry you were offended, but it wasn't intentional. It may be different and offensive where you are from and I accepted that. You might notice I changed the deals post immediately to accommodate you. Your thread, however, WAS intentionally posted to offend me. If you are going to go about demanding people be politically correct, I suggest you demonstrate it yourself first.

k, grim-anus, psycho made a comment about something looking odd... so what? he was commenting on aesthetics. it had an odd feel to him. SO WHAT?!?!?! let the man feel what he wants to feel.
here's your two bits worth of back-alley counselling: take some st. john's wort and punch a pillow until you feel better. then make a list of things that you like about yourself and recite it while brushing your teeth every day. and floss, too, while you're at it, cuz good oral hygeine is the first step to godly enlightenment.

I'm not dissin' Taiwan here, and you should know that from the post. On the other hand, you have to understand a few facts about Taiwan:
MRT (Metropolitan Rapid Transit in Tapei)
(1) multiple times the original cost
(2) World's most expensive
(3) Multiple lawsuits regarding contract breaches
(4) World's most problematic transit system
(5) Took Almost 14 years to complete construction, almost 30 years from start to finish.
Now, last time I went in December, they actually just finished the last 3 stations (developing new lines). Wouldn't it be odd to see a rapid transit system that actually works?
Now the Shinkansen isn't a subway, it's a long distance high-speed passenger trains.
Taiwan Shinkansen
(1) Already a 1 billion USD overrun in cost
(2) Problems with chip fab near the Tainan science park and
"Vibrations" from the train. After 5 years of study, no solution yet
(3) Lawsuits
(4)Planned since 1988.
Taiwan is an undeveloped democracy that will still take a few years (give them 10, if that) to develop. I think I can lay claim to what I say safely
Hey, I coined this term w/ my sister. We call Taiwan "Organized Chaos"

psycho - lotta substance in your post. kudos on ur research.
but still, you haven't answered the question. why is the existence of a high speed passenger train system like that in japan 'odd'?
sure, the project has problems (significant ones at that), but i fail to see why, short of characterizing taiwan as back-water, the existence of such a project as odd.
leon - tryin to dig dirt up on me eh? maybe this is subjective, but it seems to me that referring to females as chick isn't on the same level as making fun of people who can't speak english as well as you do.
the fact remains that nobody seemed to be offended by what i posted. in fact, ApltnHkyMutt seconded my post and asked the exact same question, also referring to girls as chicks.
it was great that you reconsidered and changed your post. but it seems like you're still convinced that there was nothing wrong with what you posted.
just coz your friends refer to themselves as fobs amongst themselves privately doesn't mean fob has acceptable uses in a public forum. referring to asian media and asian entertainment as fobby (read not up to americanized standards) is definitely a different context. it would be similar to describing a black bookstore as carrying ****** stories. i consider this derogatory. unfortunately, it seems everyone else here is as culturally sensitive as brain-dead oxen.
furthermore, just because your friends call themselves fobs doesn't mean you have the right to use that term on people you don't even know. i suggest you fully comprehend this before walking into harlem screaming ******.
as for the offensive post...guess i got a bit carried away. but i think i was justifiably pissed.
everyone else - it's not that i'm trying to pick on gotapex contributors...but the recent surge in belittling comments was very disturbing.
it's just sad that you guys lack the least bit of sensitivity, yet have a whole lot of tolerance for blatantly narrow-minded remarks.

voter turnout in the taiwan presidential elections last year was somewhere between 70-80%, reaching 90%+ in some rural areas in the south.
voter turnout in the states is considered great if it reaches even half that.
maybe the issue of undeveloped democracy is not so clear cut...
furthermore, the MRT has been working for quite awhile (long before the 'last 3 stations' were built). and supposedly, it has very convenient and effective in alleviating problematic rush hour traffic. so yes, the MRT 'really works', and has been for awhile.

Yes, it's very subjective. Just like the term, "fob" is also very subjective. I don't consider calling girls "chicks" as insulting them just like I don't consider calling someone a "fob" insulting them.

I think you're reading too much into this. The term "******" is extremely derogatory because of the history of the African Americans in this country. However, I highly doubt that the Chinese immigrants that were forced to work on the railroads were ever called fobs.

Again, this is very subjective. Calling us belittling, lacking sensitivity, narrow-minded, brain-dead oxen for using the word "fob" is stretching it. I have never in my life (before this whole incident) been given any indication that this word might even be offensive. Your cussing me out really surprised me. I'm not here to step on anyone's toes or anything. Obviously, if I'm in a room with a person who thinks "Cap 'N Crunch" is offensive, then I would refrain from using it in his/her presence, but if that word isn't offensive to me or anyone else, then I won't stop using it just because that one person thinks it's offensive. What if I thought that "ABC" was offensive? How about "banana"? Or anything that was yellow in color? What if I lived in a town of 50 people and everyone in that town thought that "wet nap" was derogatory? Should I go and cuss someone out and call them an insensitive, narrow-minded, brain-dead ox for using the word? They didn't even know that I thought it was offensive, and here I was screaming bloody murder. Offense should only be taken when the person saying it knows that it was derogatory to begin with.
That's just my thought on the matter. Where I'm from, the word isn't a bad one. I obviously did not intend to insult anyone, and will refrain from using it around people who think it is. To this day, it has only offended one person. The word will continue to be in my vocabulary, but just not in your presence.
grimani: you seem to be pretty closed minded. you're hung up on whether psycho- addressed a particular question or not...and that question is why something is "odd." a lot of things are odd, and i may describe them as such. but sometimes to describe an oddity is difficult, which is why one resorts to such a word.
and about the chick thing. there are girls that will say it's ok. but a lot of ppl are offended by it. whether or not they post here, or would reply to your post, are other matters. i have said stuff about ppl saying "chick" before...so you can't exactly say nobody cares about that. leon's fob remark can be considered the same. but your attitude of "it's ok for me to say 'chick,' but for leon to say 'fob' is wrong is just plain.....odd.

actually, i've never read your post. i usually ignore freebie posts.
whether or not they post here, or would reply to your post, are other matters.
therefore, had i not said anything about fob, it would still be wrong for leon to post it?
Yes, it's very subjective. Just like the term, "fob" is also very subjective. I don't consider calling girls "chicks" as insulting them just like I don't consider calling someone a "fob" insulting them.
Maybe it's different in Cali (although I doubt this, as the term fob originated there I believe). I think there is some degree of dissimilarity between chick and fob tho. Chick is simply another way of referring to a female (or so I thought...dont know the history of the word). Fob on the other hand seems to be attributed only to those asians who don't have a solid grasp on English. Fob jokes tend to focus on weird accents, lack of proper grammar, etc. It's basically "I'm gonna call you a name because you're Asian, you're an immigrant, and you're English is laughable".
As for ABC and banana...Sure, ABC has been used in public contexts meaning just an "american born chinese". However, many times that word also carries a negative connotation...implying that the said person is too whitewashed to even recognize their own culture, in which it means the same as banana. Would you not be offended (or psycho- not offended) if on some trip into Taiwan you were singled out for your crappy Mandarin and called a banana? The fact that fob is a lot more common due to the sheer number of immigrants doesn't matter...a derogatory term is derogatory no matter how many times it is used.
but yeah, whatever. i seem to be the only one with such thoughts here. doesn't seem like i'm convincing anyone...so forget it
Yeah, seems like we have different backgrounds. So, let's just just let bygones be bygones. Truce?
