Hi all,

Well my friends, the worst has happened. I purchased the 22" NEC FP1370 monitor from TigerDirect two weeks ago (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=24006). The monitor proved to be problematic, with image ghosting (especially of text and icons on white background) and a glowing halo effect on the left side of the display area. I called NEC tech support, and after some attempts from the representative to alleviate the problem, it was determined that the unit was defective and qualified for a warranty replacement. A new monitor was shipped to me within the week.

Unfortunately, the unit directly from NEC was even worse. Still minor ghosting, but the worst part was that the halo effect was on both sides, plus the horizontal size of the display was broken!! It couldn't even be adjusted!

I have all the correct monitor INF files, and the problems exist even when tried on two computer systems (one with a Voodoo3, one with a TNT2Ultra). No other monitors have problems, including a Viewsonic PS790 19", the Gateway VX1120 22" (from the concurrent deal and equivalent to the Mitsubishi 2020u), and an Optiquest Q71 17".

TigerDirect REFUSES to give me a refund on the monitor. That's "just their policy". I've tried several times to reach an upper management person, but their policy is supposedly written in stone. The best they could offer was a return-shipping-paid exchange for another monitor. SORRY - not what I'm looking for!

I am trying to negotiate with NEC at this point.

If you have such an acute sense for these minor problems why are you even wasting the time/money in refurbished monitors?

umm... no need for insults here...

i would not have considered them minor problems. they were seriously bad for my eyesight, and i found myself straining my vision.

"refurbished" doesn't always mean "used" or defective. they might have just been returned to a vendor. after which, it would have had to be shipped back to the manufacturer (NEC) to be inspected or tuned up to be certified for resale. in this case, tigerdirect must have picked up a deal with nec to get a bunch of their refurbs. (since tigerdirect doesn't do returns and most likely didn't have the stock of returned monitors themselves - let alone get factory recertification from nec, this doens't seem like a stretch. i could be wrong though.)

i was in the market for a 21"+ monitor, and this was a supposedly top-of-the-line model, supposedly recertified by the manufacurer themselves. and at HALF the price (including mail-in-rebate). i just made an oversight and didn't pay attention to the return policy. i even went to resellerratings.com to find that tigerdirect had a bad record, but i asked people here in gotapex and they seemed to say it was okay.

so i got burned. was there any fault to be placed on me? yes, of course. but should i be justified in my frustration? i believe so - although it seems you don't. but that's a matter of opinion. i still don't see why you had to imply that my situation was a complete result of my own utter carelessness.

don't arbitrarily accuse others of being nitwitted. cuz i don't know what it accomplishes for you.

Did you pay with a credit card? You might try disputing the charges. Does the receipt say anything about no refund? Does the website order page say anything about no refund? Too bad you didn't pay with American Express Blue.

yeah, the website, receipt and all that seem to say no refunds and only exchanges/store credit - mostly in the "fine print", or sort of hidden from easy view. oh well. it was this purchase in particular that made me apply for amex blue.

You can still dispute the charge. They failed to deliver the product as promised. Give them one more chance to replace it at their expense. If they fail to satisfy you, have the charge contested. You did not agree to purchase a defective monitor. You agreed to purchase a refurbished monitor which should work as well as a new one.
