View Full Version : The Police wanted me

Yesterday my roommate told me that two police officers came to see me about magazine subscriptions under my name, but under other people's credit card information. They told my roommate that they Internet-traced the source of these subscriptions to my dorm room. I do not know how they traced it to my room, but I did not do anything illegal.
What do I do? Has this happened to anybody else? I talked to the police, but they said the case has not been assigned to anybody yet, so all I can do is wait for a detective to call me. Please help.

I would suggest getting some legal advice quickly. Since you are a student, there is likely a student aide or liason that will be able to give you advice on your particular situation. You should also try and gather any paperwork that might have info. I would suggest not trashing your hard drive (yet), as you may need some info. And, of course, let your parents in on it, once you figure out what is going on. Do not talk with the police by yourself - you need some legal protection
Try very hard not to let them charge you with anything, as having to check the box "have you ever been charged with a felony" sucks (just ask my ex).
Good luck - this has the potential to be very serious.

If you didn't do anything illegal, then you'd have nothing to worry about. The tone of your post, however, suggest otherwise.
Find a lawyer fast. You're going to need it...THIEF!! :)

something that struck me here, too, kinda goes along with what pennypinch says. you forgot to say "i don't even own these magazines!!!!" or "i don't even subscribe to these magazines!!!" or something along those lines. also, the "but i did not do anything illegal" sounds a lot like "i used the credit cards, but....."
get a lawyer. find out what they got on you. and don't talk to the cops without your lawyer there. they will use that, no matter how innocent it seems.

Being innocent is not a guarantee that your life won't be turned upside down by the legal system. Legal advice will help to level the playing field. But please don't assume saying "I didn't do it" can be a shield if the lawman has set his sights on you! Justice and the law aren't always related.
First of all, welcome to G|A geezer88! :)
You should try to find out if anybody has been using your computer, especially since you're living in the dorms. Are the magazines being delivered to you, or was it just signed up for from your comp?

When I first saw the headline, I thought that Sting wanted you to play drums in his band or something...
Oh well...
If you were Jenna Bush (or her boytoy) you could always have the Secret Service bail you out.

The only magazines I've been getting are the ones I got from ecampus after buying a textbook. And I called their 1-800 number after a month to tell them that I did not want them anymore.

Well, then you've got nothing to worry about, do you? Make them show you proof that these mags are being delivered to you, get them to show how they know they were ordered from your computer. Probably some stupid frat boy joke.
