NYC's Bloomberg to ban large sodas

Servings of soda >16oz would be banned under this proposal.

“Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in the Governor’s Room at City Hall.

“New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said. “I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do.”

It'll piss off a lot of lobby groups, but the best solution is simpler. There's no need to tax/limit sugary drinks/food, just eliminate the corn subsidy which allows HFCS to be used as a cheap sweetener.

On a side note, I also find it amusing this article comes up now, as just 2 nights ago I decided to have Burger King and as usual I was somewhat surprised at the size of the people in there.

What mostly caught my eye was a younger but completely formless woman (17-25 range) who was also waiting for her food, but was sucking down a very large, large enough to not fit in a cup holder, drink. Im guessing it was their 32 or 42oz option and some quick google-fu says that added at minimum 400-500 calories to her day assuming she didnt get a free refill.

What I want to know is "why is soda the bad guy?"

We don't go into poor neighborhoods and start banning tall boys? They don't ban the sale of meat lovers pizzas to fewer than 4 people. Has anyone ever seen a Hardess commercial? The problem's not on their drink menu...

Also, I've got a real problem with the government telling me I can't have something when I'm not the one with the problem. I'd rather they force the sale of cheap tap water in something larger than the dixie cups they give out here than ban the sale of something else.

I agree that its a huge and not needed overstep (especially since theres the easier solution I mentioned above), but to answer your question, soda is the bad guy because it is a popular form of empty calories.

Romoval of soda from a diet is also an easy way to reduce caloric intake.

Also, from what Ive read, the body doesnt recognize liquid calories the same way it does food calories, so your body tends to not regulate it.
