Help on Booting Error

First of all, thanks for taking your time on reading
this post.

System: Pentium Celeron 700MHz EMachine
30G HDD, 128M SDRAM, Modem card...

I've been using this machine for about two years
and about 3 month ago, upgraded HDD and RAM, and used
without any problem until yesterday.

But, suddenly, it's no longer working.

The error message I got when boot the computer is:

While initializing device VKD
Windows protection error.

You need to restart your computer.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

I tried to reinstall OS (win 98), but after finishing
all the sytem files, and rebooting, I got the same message
again and again.. (reinstall without formatting)

Any help would be appriciated.

you have a bad VXD. the quickest thing is to reformat, or at the least delete the windows directory in dos mode then reinstall.

You could go into safe mode, then go to the accessory system, and see if windows will replace the file. You could go into safe mode and do it yourself. You could go into safe mode, run msconfig, and prevent that vxd from booting, and see if if that fixes teh problem, then delete it and replace it.

I would almost bet that if reinstalling windows didn't help that it's a bad memory stick. If you have more than one, pull them out one at a time and try to see if it works. If all else fails go to a local best buy or someplace similar, buy a new stick of ram and try it. You can always return it if you'd like.
