Comcast keeps pestering me to change my cable modem I bought from Docsis 2.0 to 3.0. From my quick research, I don't think I would see a benefit unless I also change my plan and my wireless router from a g to an n in addition to my cable modem. This will help Comcast on it's operation side but I don't think that will translate into savings to me. Anyone else make the change and notice the speed difference?

Do you own your modem or are you renting?

My understanding is that DOCSIS 3 is able to handle much higher speeds, and that generally you will get quicker speeds than you pay for. You might not see this on the wireless side, but im sure you have some stuff that's hard wired.

DOCSIS 2 is really all you need, but you MAY see a slight increase in speed by going to 3. 2 will support up to a ~30Mb connection from Comcast, which is about the highest home offering they have. However, many people who have upgraded from a DOCSIS 2 to a 3 modem have reported at least a slight increase in speed - maybe from 22 to 25, or from 24 to 27Mbps.

So I'd say that if you're renting your equipment from Comcast, go ahead & let them upgrade it. Even if you don't change your plan you may get a small boost in speed. Another option is to tell them to just collect their equipment back & go buy yourself a DOCSIS3 modem (Motorola 6200 series) for about $80. You'll make that up in less than a year compared to the rental charge.

If you OWN your DOCSIS2 equipment, I'd say it's not worth the $$ to upgrade it for the marginal increase you may see.

after lightning took out my 2.0 modem, I bought a 3.0 modem and my speed went from 19 to 25. It CAN make a difference, but won't always.
