Uhm, wasn't it AOL-TimeWarner that killed it?

AOL was very clear when they bought Netscape that they had no interest in either the server or the browser. They sold the server to Sun and gave the browser to the public (by continuing Mozilla)

Not sure that this is really news. People could have seen this a few years ago, but just chose to ignore it when they could have (such as during the MS anti-trust suit)

Hah. Whatever. Microsoft didn't kill them, Netscape just sucked. You could argue that their persistent refusal to join the browser standards was borne of everyone else using IE (and thus they could be the New Balance to MS's Nike), but the truth of the matter is that the only people using Netscape were those that a) had a bitter, irrational hatred towards MS, b) those that had been using Netscape for years and were not mentally flexible enough to use another browser or c) those who'd had it packaged as OEM with their computer, and were not computer literate enough to know there was something else.

Yeah I think netscape will somehow live on.
I used to like netscape until they came out with communicator and were bought out by AOL. (ugh)
Now I don't care for it much. But still use Navigator occasionally since I need to design for both Netscape and IE. I don't like Communicator at all.
Anyhow, I don't think IE is that much better. Wish there was a real browser out there.

I too used to be an only Netscape user who wouldn't ever get near IE. I still keep it installed so that i can test the compatability of the webpages i make. I always figured MS paid off AOL to buy Netscape and ruin it. Why else would they fuck up the #1 browser. (It was #1 when AOL bought them, or at least close to #1)
