Just a quick FYI, Nokia has phased out the 82xx series. The reception is really poor (I have an 8290, and my wife does as well).

also from all of the reviews i read about the 8290, none have mentioned that the reception is poor. maybe depends on what plan u have and what city u live in.

Really? my 8260 has done pretty well between Santa Monica and UCLA. And when I go up to SF, the reception is stunning.

The 3390 is BASICALLY the replacement. Unfortunately, it's a bit bigger. I'm out with friends a lot and we got a whole assortment of cellphones with us (from Pacbell, we have two 8290's, a 6190, and a 5190). The 6190 and 5190 both have noticably better reception practically everywhere (there are times the reception is the same for all phones, but the 8290 is never better than the other two, while the other two beat out the 8290 quite often).

I have a 8290 from Powertel (becoming Voicestream). I had a 6190 before and can verify that the 8290's reception is worse than the 6190. I've added an internal booster antenna, and that has helped quite a bit. I love the small size and connecting my Palm M505 to the phone with Infrared.

i've never used the 51xx 61xx but everyone else seems to have them & get slightly better reception. i think the 3390 is pretty ugly too besides being bigger. i had a 8290 and now have a 8890 which has even worse reception. its still liveable, just noticeably faded when getting to the edge of cells. its perfectly fine on campus in philly though. if anyone knows how to connect it to a palm Vx please email me, i get all these errors & can't get any web browsing.
