NewsUpd.exe is a spyware program that is
silently installed when installing certain Creative Labs hardware, including the SoundBlaster (tm) 16. This program is not disclosed in the Licens Agreement or mentioned in the relevant documentation.

Weird, none of those things are anywhere in sight in my system.

yeah me neither.... but i did install ad-aware a while ago so that might have removed it

Actually a lot of software you install on your system does the same thing this software does. When you electonically register the software, it sends the info to the company. This info can- but is not limited to or has to be -- cpu type and speed, memory installed, space available on your hard drive and location and version of the install. It can also check for updates.

It isn't searching for CC info or anything.

UPS shipping software has something very similar. As soon as a customer communicated once with UPS, we knew that basic info.
