View Full Version : Trying to upgrade external USR V.Everything modem to x2/v.90

I got a Courier V.Everything modem from Ebay with the seller telling me I could upgrade this from its 28.8/33.6 state to a x2/v.90 modem. I found the firmware on USR's website and performed the flash upgrade without a hitch. However, I can only connect at 31200. When I do a ATI7, there is no mention of x2 or v.90 in the Options slot. When I do a ATI11, there's a slot for v.90 so I'm assuming that the flash upgrade did take. Anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

(No, it isn't a line problem since I have an internal v.90 modem that connects at high speeds fine...)

I don't think so. I also have an USR V.everything (that I don't use anymore since I'm on DSL), but I've flashed this puppy from 16k8 to 28k8 to V.fast. to V34 then to X2 and finally to V90. Every upgrade went flawless. Though I'm sorry to say, I did this upgrade more than two years ago and I can't find the flashrom anymore.
The fact that USR went titsup also doesn't help. I was real sad when that happened : they were the best modemmakers in the world!

Though it's possible you have a faulty modem, I doubt it. You just have to find the correct flashrom. (and this will probably not be easy)

I'm pretty sure I used the correct flash upgrade for the modem. On another board, they mentioned that I needed an upgrade key? Did you need that too?

WARNING: STUPID QUESTION COMING UP!!!

Have you checked 3com's site for upgrades??

Also... did you try the V.92 upgrade?

I'm not a complete idiot here... 3com refers you to USR's site for flashrom updates. I used the appropriate one and nada.

Realizing that you are definately not an idiot...are you sure you can get v.90 on your phone line? If you are too far from your hub, or on a multiplexed line, v.90 will be impossible, and 31200 is a good speed.

I have a V.Everything Ext (I love it) and it's the fastest analog modem I have ever used/seen used. In Tribes2, my pings get down to 140 and my connection in RedAlert2 look like DSL.

Yes, I can get high speed connections on my phone line. I have an internal v.90 modem which connects fine at the high speeds. I want to set this modem up on my SMC wireless router so I can surf from time to time from my laptop.

OK. After querying my modem I can say with some certainty that x2/v.90 is NOT enabled on your modem. My AT17 clearly states 'v32 turbo,v34,x2,v90...(etc)'

Now. I remember when I flashed that there was different flashes-one for 25MHz modems and another for an older or newer version. check that you have the correct flash. Also, you flashed in a pure DOS session, right? It's important. If you're still hitting a wall getting this beauty working, I'll see if I can track down my old flash.

(on that note...) Does anyone know how to EXTRACT the flash from my firmware?

http://www.usr.com/support/drivers-template.asp?prod=s-cour

This page has the firmware upgrades, drivers (I use the native Win2k driver), and a PDF on how to flash your modem. check it out. First, make sure you have the 25MHz or 20MHz modem.
Good luck and let me know how it goes. I remember having no problems when I flashed my modem.

Bires - Yes, I did grab the correct flash for my model(25mhz US/Canada). I flashed in both a Windows environment and a pure DOS environment. Same result. Other boards I've perused mentioned I needed an upgrade key which USR doesn't offer anymore according to those same people. Anyway, I appreciate any help I can extract from you guys.. :)

(Ayup, that's where I grabbed the flash util from, Bires..)

...and instructions. The instructions are fairly complicated...which is good in this case.
If you'd like the instructions and update files, give me your email address and I'll mail them to ya. The instructions are printed, so I'll try to OCR them and email that to you, otherwise, you're stuck with a jpeg.

Get back and let me know.

It's now ten pm (PDT)...
fyi: I'm going to be gone most of tomorrow, so if you want those files, you'll have to wait a while

Thanks Bires, I really appreciate it whenever you can do it.

Thanks, Bires. Those files did the trick. I really appreciate the help! (Here's to hoping the v.92 update won't be as convoluted...)
