View Full Version : Hard Drive upgrade advice, please
so,. anyway, my capacity is maxing out and Im looking at hard drives between 60-80 gigs at around 170 to 210
Ive been doing some scouting and I've found a western digital 80 gig 7200 rpm with ATA/100, but everywhere Ive seen reviews of anything people use the IBM drives, so im just wondering peoples opinions on quality among the labels.

Western Digital drives use IBM internals. Basicaly they are almost the exact same drives.
Go with whatever you think is the better deal.

ya. But they're not as good as the ones that you get with a Dairy Queen kid's meal.

I´ve been using IBM drives the last 3 Years - ALWAYS running smooth. I use My system as a Pro Musician (VST, LOGIC... etc.) Everything comes out nicely!!
Get a IBM GXP series drive. (Remember: 2 x 30 is better than 1 x 60 - U only loose half your data IF the HD fails, which is very unlikely!)

my older ibm was pretty loud, always that clicking and such but with my new WD its super quite, i never know its working, never hear clicking, never hear vibrations, i know WD use IBM internals, its prolly that my 10 gig is a little older (read ancient)

Yes you are right, they have a habbit sometimes to make some quite weird noises - I think it is the thermal recalibration causing that, but i am not shure.
But still good value. (In DK a 30 GB 7200RPM GXP model costs around 160$)

The new seagate drives are also looking really good. Look into those also.

Yes, It is nice to see that Seagate is getting things going again. They have been sleeping for some years now so the time has once again come to one of the companies that actually were starting it all! (Anyone remember when a PC had a 20 MByte HD - with PLENTY of space - a lot of Seagates where around then!!)
