Quite possibly the McLaren F1.
well...this isn't the fastest....but....
i used to have this 69 barracuda, 340 formula sport. it had 300 ponies, 300 ft lbs of torque. i miss that thing. it was all stock. it wasnt the quickest around...but close to it. and like i said.....all stock.

I thought it was the 2000 Porsche GT1, but then I could have sworn the Jaguar XJ220 or whatever it was was also pretty quick. The McLaren's gotta rank right up there, but they stopped making those. What was that Ferrari a coupla years ago? Well, it's one of those. I don't think the Viper's in the same class...though it IS fast as balls.

I love that Viper, but I would like to have one of these:

Yes, it is a Camaro. A 2000 prototype, in fact. It has a 572 cu in v8 in it. Must be some new prototype engine that GM built. I have never seen a camaro with this type of horsepower and 0-60mph time, pretty much the same as that Venom 800 TT. I wish they would actually make them. Check it out:

The Viper Venom 800 Twin Turbo does 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds (in racing slicks) and 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds in regular street tires...
Top speed is projected to be about 230 MPH...by Motortrend Magazine (I think) The article also stated that this car is the fastest production vehicle out right now...
Holy shnikies that's fast. About as fast as my stock 85 Mercury Cougar! ;)

Okay, time to end this conversation right now. I'm a huge McLaren fan, so I can tell you straight off the bat that the fastest production McLaren was the 1997 McLaren F1 at 240 mph, dropping that baby into the #6 street legal position a couple dozen cars above the viper venom. Not only is that the fastest production McLaren, but that is still the #1 fastest production car ever. I believe that the fastest street legal car ever was...the 1988 Chevrolet Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer at a screaming 254.76 mph. However, only one of these cars exists. Callaway did say that they could produce these babies for a clean 400 grand though...but nobody ever ordered one.

unfortunately...as previously mentioned, McLaren ended their production car line a few years back. These days the fastest (nonconcept) car that you can grab is definitely a Ferrari and probably of the F50 series...but that won't be easy to snag. :( Besides...the unique (illegal in America) three seat arrangement makes the McLaren quite worth looking for.

Actually, with the Viper Venom 800 TT not being a concept, it would be the fastest production car. The Ferrari Koenig F50 is close, though...

So when are you going to get one? :D

Fastest car around, I think, is still the Dauer (Porsche) 962, at least in terms of acceleration. That Sledgehammer may have just a few mph on it in terms of top speed, but I'd rather have the 0-60, personally. It equals that quoted Viper spec of 2.6, but I'm guessing that the Porsche is gonna be quicker in the turns, seeing as its chassis is set up specifically for those speeds, whereas the Viper was designed for a good bit less power.
As for the other supercars, the GT1 is still my favorite car in the world, appearance-wise, and schools the others in braking/handling, even if it gives up a few points in 0-60. The XJ220 tops out at, well, 220 (hence the name) because of the body design, so it doesn't quite get up to the 240s/250s with the 962 and the Sledgehammer. The McLaren still holds the title of fastest production car, as far as I know, but you can throw a million bucks at just about any road car with a good body design and make it faster than a McLaren. And the Ferrari F50, as impressive as it is, isn't really in the same class as these others. Then again, it's over 10 years old now, and Ferrari is working up the F60 to compete with the Carrera GT and the other current-gen supercars. Should be interesting. :D
Anybody know if another car maker has taken McLaren's title of fastest production road car since they stopped making the F1?

Heh... it would be cool to see one of those 962s on the freeway, but with only 10 made, I don't think I ever will. :)
