View Full Version : fast cars: what do you own? what have you owned?
k, we all saw the "i dream of" fast cars thread. what kind of car do you folks really have?
i used to have a 69 barracuda, 340 formula s. 300 ponies/300 ft lb of torque. all stock, except for the 650 cfm carter carb. oh...and the shift kit. 0-60 in about 6 seconds. make sure you drive it straight....cuz it couldn't handle for nuttin. but there's nuttin like driving a rare classic!
right now i have a bmw 325e. it's not as fast or as quick, but it handles soooooooo much better. i regularly take the ramps marked for 35 at around 60 to 70 without a sweat. the power moonroof is nice, too :P

1990 Chevy Camaro RS v6. First car, what can I say. I wanted something that wouldn't rape me on insurance or gas, but I wanted a sports car. :)
Just yesterday I took a 35mph ramp @ 80mph. Those posted signs are such BS. I really don't know how they come up with those limits. I have a lead foot, I guess. I have a problem staying under 75-80 on the freeways. :D

You would think that there would be many people like us, but nope people are slow. Too slow if you ask me. The fast lane is for fast people, not slow dim wits who won't yield to the faster car.
I have no problems doing 75+ on transition roads and such. Which is really suprising because I have cheap Wal-Mart tires, which I bought two years ago and have to be rotated.

mojo - my step-dad's got a '68 barracuda (that he usually refuses to let me drive), and that car rocks on the straights. Nothing I've driven compares to my Porsche on mountain roads, but that Barracuda is something else.
So, right, my current car is my '85 Porsche 944. Needs power, has handling. Can blow by most rice rockets, especially at highway speeds when they start gasping for air, so I'm happy with it until I can upgrade to a 944 Turbo S or a 911.
'68 cuda, eh? hehe....nice. i love the classic american muscle cars. which engine does it have? is that the fastback, or the convertible?

'89 Trans AM GTA(Corvette L98 engine) with flowmaster + upgraded ECU. I could let a modern 'stang GT(who thought he was racing a slower car) pass me, downshift(over 100) and still pass him by before 140. Curves were a bear though. Live rear axle would become unsettled and break loose over any road irregularities :(.

68 Vette: 327-350 HP with headers, 780 Holley, Electronic Ignition, Torker Manifold, 4 speed. The only drawback was a 3.36 rear axle ratio. It really screamed.
I still own it, but I haven't had it on the road for 20 years.

ok, I hate to be a dick about this, but the fast lane is for people doing right at the speed limit. They legally have all the right to be in the fast lane, and not go 1 mile over the limit. It pisses me off when jerk-offs wanna do 90 in the fast lane, and your doing 75 (the limit). Youd get over, but the ppl not itn eh fast lane are doing 60 and you see no need to get over to let Mr jerk-off fly past you when you have every right to be there.
On the other hand, if ya can get over, it's always curteous to let Mr IwannaGo90mphInA70Zone have the fast lane for a few secs...

Unfortunately, I actually don't know which engine it has! It's the convertible, though, in that bright-ass yellow. It actually looks kinda like the one on Nash Bridges, minus that black hood scoop and trim.
Just sold my 1998 Saturn SL2. Now that was a power vehicle. :P Good handling, not a lot of power, but it looked nice.

the fast lane is a passing lane...if you are not passing anybody you do not beling in the fast lane....if you are in the fast lane and somebody is trying to pass you then you are still in the wrong lane so get out of the way. In an ideal world everybody goes the speed limit. But this isnt an ideal world and frankly people get frustrated quickly. if you get out of the way then they wont get frustrated and you wont have to wory about people tailgating you or sweving around you or anything else.

riiiiight..... you see, I AM passing in the passing lane.
I'm doing 75 - the max limit, in the Passing Lane, Passing all the ppl doing 65 in the other lanes. Then Mr (or Mrs.?) A$$cavity talegates me (nono #1) cause he was just doing 95 (nono #2) in the "passing" lane, and get all mad :naughty: cause he/she thinks I shouldn't be in the passing lane, even though I'm passing everyone else...
but i do understand, and i know this isn't a perfect world... if it were, all we'd have to do is say "Beam me up Scotty!" :)
ok, ok... enuf with that, pardon my digreswsing from the thread topic...
humm, well, does ALMOST count????... I ALMOST bought a '91 BMW 318is, red on black, nearly Mint cond. Alas, some poor bastard used the "buy it now" price and bought it out from under me! (aye, and a sneaky bastard he was!)
I'm still keepin' me eye open fer any possible other bimmers...

If you are int he passing lane and someone is trying to pas you then you need to get out of the way like i said...evasive maneuvering on the part of impatient people. plus here in cali the speed limit is 65 which is slow. 75 would be way better. I wouldnt even feel the need to speed at 75

Yeah, I'll bet. Everyone always wants to get there just a little bit faster than they currently are - I tend to drive about 10% faster than the speed limit, no matter what it is, because it's faster, but I figure it won't get me a ticket. And I think a lot of people think the same way. I don't have an "ideal" speed on the highway, I just want to get where I'm going as quickly as possible without getting a ticket.

Actually, you have a point, a lot of cars aren't made to go much above 75. I've driven a few SUVs that feel pretty unstable above 80, and an Eagle Vision that had a disturbing loss of traction right around 85. I guess I'm just used to my car, which is set up to cruise comfortably at 90.
But guess how many people would drive their Suburbans at 100 mph (actually, I think they top out at 96, but you get the point) if they could legally? Regardless of the safety issues involved, probably quite a few, since everybody's in a hurry to get somewhere.

I think they would run out of gas before they topped 80.
I once drove a Buick Park Avenue close to 100. Very, Very Smoooth -- Couldn't feel a thing in that boat.
My favorite car to drive when I was a teen was Mom's pontiac parisianne station wagon. That thing had a massive V8 engine. The 0-60 time was great, but you couldn't turn worth a damn without fish-tailing all over the place.

you said the magic words "buick park avenue" i drove one of those bombs for 4 years. Not only are u riding comfortably with room all around, but they're really really fast. Ok not really, but i was racing my friend's 328 and i spanked him in an 88 BPA, kinda sad huh? well yeah that car was fast and comfortable and weighed 4300 lbs. 500 less than a suburban. Speed comfort and mass, in a car not a freakin suv. Now i'm stuck with a stupid honda accord. I miss my buick.
oh yeah and if i'm not mistaken it says on most freeways "slower traffic keep right", that's not in reference to a particular speed, that's completely relative, no matter what the speed of the other vehicle you're breaking the law if you're going slower and someone is wanting to pass u and u don't move over. The sign is in black and white too which makes it legally binding not recommended.

Fastest car I ever owned was a Integra GS-r. I know, not really a monster car that some of you guys have owned, but it was quick. I hit 138mph for probably 1/2 a second and never did it again. But normally I do drive at an average speed of between 85-100mph, depending on traffic. One thing I will never forget, I was probably cruising at around 100mph on the PA Turnpike coming back from CMU. A vette just zipped by me. I'm afraid to estimate what speed he was at. It was a humbling experience.
But I'd have to side with Nanotech on this one. If the guy on the left lane is still passing cars, than he/she has a right to the left lane just as much as you do. If you think you're a good enough driver to be driving above the speed limit, than you should be able to cut him on his right. That's what I usually do.

Hmm. Yeah, I hate having to slow down when I'm in the far left lane as much as anybody (although in CA the lanes are all screwy because of that carpool lane - a lot of times the lane with the least traffic and therefore the fastest people is the far right or one in from the far right...), but I'd rather slow down and wait for the person to get out of the way than try to cut around him/her.
I think I'm a fairly decent driver, but a lot of accidents are caused by people who think that they're channeling Michael Schumacher or something and go weaving in and out of the slower lanes in order to pass somebody who's not quite fast enough in the fast lane. So I usually don't do it unless the rest of the road is pretty clear. Know what I mean?

I have no problem if a guy's just popping out to pass someone. I can understand that. How in the world is passing someone on the right more dangerous than tailgating? If I had a choice to tailgate someone to tell him to move or to pass him on the right lane, I'd chose the right lane.
I guess you can choose to tailgate. But if the guy is in a pissy mood and decides to hit his brakes, tough luck for you. I mean you take your risks.

I think y'all miss understood when I said pass the guy on the right. Or maybe I just don't see any problem with it while other people do. People pass on the right all the time. Or does that only happen in NYC? I wasn't meaning to drive like a maniac and "weave" through traffic. I just meant, if the guy is going too slow and doesn't want to leave the left lane, than pass him on the right. Happens all the time. It's no more dangerous than driving 85 mph.

the problem as I see it is that those who want to go fast will not slow down and casually pass the guy on the right...they WILL weave in and out. That in my oppinion is way more dangerous then just going fast in the fast lane.

If you can do something and the other person can't, you want them out of the way. But if someone does something you can't do, than they're a nut. Driving 85+ seems easy and normal to a lot of us. And not dangerous at all. But I passed a friend of mine who was driving around 55 while I was going 90. She said she literally felt her Neon shake a little when I passed her. So now when I pass people, I no longer "zoom" by them. After I've cleared them, than I speed up.
Well anyway, I don't think people should complain about other people's driving if they are obeying the law. If the person is driving @ 70 and is passing people on his right, than he has every right to be on that left lane. Now if there was no one on his right or he is driving slower than the peopel on his right, than he should move off.
*And personally, I do believe "weaving" is a lot more dangerous than speeding. But I do know people who do it, and I do feel safe in their cars*

Fastest car I have ever owned was my 96' Probe GT - It had lots of power when you got up to speed, and wasnt too much of a slouch off the line either. I only got her up to 125 against a Cobra. (Thats what happens when you start going head to head at 70mph)
I have also had a Chevy Nova, a 72 MGB, 84 Jimmy, and currently my F-150.
My father has a 500SL, which is always lots of fun to drive. Anytime I go home to visit, its mine for the duration, which equates to lots of fun. Only thing is, I am deathly afraid of crashing it, so I go the speed limit.
My father is annoying me, by debating between a new Ferrari and another mercedes, he has been doing this for the last few years and wont commit to either of them. He is a bit afraid of buying Ferraris when the market isnt going very well.
Cars that I was looking at but have decided against for various reasons:
Trans-am (ram air)- didnt like the way I sat in it
SS Camaro - same problem
300Z limited edition twin turbo - I had visions of cops dancing on my grave
3-Series - didnt fit
WEll that is my list. I am sure I will remember a few more though.

Fact: slower traffic must yield to faster traffic.
Fact: the above is a law.
Logical extension: those who do not yield to faster traffic are not obeying the law.
The yield law does not make any provisions for speed. If you're going 100, and some guy's behind you doing 120, you are legally obligated to yield.
Therefore, even if the car ahead is passing people in more rightmost lanes, he does not have "every right to be on that left lane."

True, true. But I was driving in Washington when I was back in college, and saw a pair of police cruisers behind me. Being young and stupid, I decided I'd stay in the left lane and do the speed limit exactly. There was no-one else on the road.
What happens? On go the lights, over I go. He pulls me over for failing to yield, even though I wasn't speeding. When I asked which he'd prefer, that I speed or not yield, he replied, obviously, neither, but given a choice, that I follow the flow of traffic (which may or may not be going the speed limit!) and yield to faster traffic. Thankfully, no ticket, but a good lesson: going too slowly for following traffic is an offense just as speeding is.

anyone who thinks it is a good idea to go exactly the speed limit in the left lane and refuse to get out of the way of someone who wants to go faster is a self-centered ass and a fool. it doesn't hurt you a goddamned bit to expend the .05 fucking calories it takes to twitch your wrist muscles enough to turn your steering wheel about 20 degrees to the right for a few goddamned seconds. if you need to replenish after the exhaustion it causes, lick a tic-tac and shut the hell up. get over yourself.
anyone who thinks it is their god-given right to drive over the speed limit is a self-centered ass and a dickweed. if you want to drive fast, and you don't think that speed limits apply to you because you are suuuuuuuch a good driver and no random fuck-up will eeeeeeever happen to you, thus giving you and anyone lucky enough to be driving near you the opportunity to die at 85 mph (when they could have survived at 65 mph), fine. but don't start talkin shit about people driving the speed limit in the passing lane. they are performing a public service by slowing your dumb ass down, and it is only dangerous if you decide to tailgate and devote your attention to screaming and obscene hand gestures instead of driving. follow the fucking law, save a little gas, and get over yourself.

anyone who thinks it is their god-given right to drive over the speed limit is a self-centered ass and a dickweed. if you want to drive fast, and you don't think that speed limits apply to you because you are suuuuuuuch a good driver and no random fuck-up will eeeeeeever happen to you, thus giving you and anyone lucky enough to be driving near you the opportunity to die at 85 mph (when they could have survived at 65 mph), fine. but don't start talkin shit about people driving the speed limit in the passing lane. they are performing a public service by slowing your dumb ass down, and it is only dangerous if you decide to tailgate and devote your attention to screaming and obscene hand gestures instead of driving. follow the fucking law, save a little gas, and get over yourself.
Sounds like somebody's got a little road rage... :D

hehe road rage... Tuned jetta's are the bomb even though the old ones are slow as hell they always look fat.
Tuning is another interesting subject something that i won't ever do again. I installed a "performance" intake exhaust, and a header. What did i get? nothing except better gas mileage, which i can't complain about. 30mpg in a 91 honda accord you can't beat it. But i was looking for a little more on the fast side... didn't happen all i have now is a damn econo box that makes way too much freakin noise. waaaaaa, waaaaaa, waaaaaa, waaaa, waaaaa!!!! woohoo fifth gear. stupid rice burners.

hmmm, better gas milage from a tuned car....all i have is an intake and exhaust and mine has gone down. anyway, to experience real power increases, you gotta go for a turbo, supercharger and/or NOS. i mean, bolt ons increment your hp and torque marginally...whereas forcing some air (or nitrous) into the mix will definitely get noticed.
nonetheless, the old monicker stands true...ther is no substitute for displacement (or something like that)...my next ride will definitely have 6 cylinders, and hopefully a big ass turbo or two.

Heheheh, I like DarkFury's version. But I think the real saying (from the big-block hot-rodders back in the day) goes, "There ain't no substitute for cubic inches." Gotta have the southern drawl, too. Definitely a requirement. :D
And aglio, there's a certain engine that comes to mind (my mind, anyway, and probably pennypinch's) when you say 6 cylinders and a turbo or two... Flat six, rear-engine, anyone?
I think my brain has gone haywire this morning, by the way, so everyone feel free to continue ignoring me as you usually do.

Are you referring to a turbocharged Corvair? The first turbo Corvair had 150 HP and by 1966(?) had 180 HP. It was fast but it didn't break any records.Gearing was not very great for drag racing.
I stuffed a 150 HP turbo Corvair in the back of a 59 VW. It was pretty fast, but you had to start out in second, really rev it up and dump the clutch if you wanted to seriously race. A guy I knew had a 4 Barrel sitting atop his Corvair powered VW and always beat me. After I tore the thing down and sold it by parts, I found out that the turbo was worn out. I always wondered how it would have run with the turbo in tip-top condition.

Chill with the cursing welfareloser. You can get your point across without using so much of it.
Hey guys. Chill on the cursing. I disabled the censors because this wasn't a problem in the past, I really don't want to reenable it again.
82 Postal Jeep BABY!!!
