If you haven't already, send paypal a note explaining the situation. They have people to track down scammers - you might as well have them on your side. Tell them you have all the e-mails to/from this individual (you still do, right?) and offer to send them for tracking purposes.

By the request of Passwird, I'm posting my theory here. And up until now, I was envyous of him making $20 for sitting on his butt :p

But anyways, my theory is, if Passwird put $220 of the forged money in his Fatshoe account (from his Paypal account), and then shipped the money to the guy, wouldn't the Fatshoe Transaction be reversed too? I mean, if you put it in retrospect, if you had someone send you $1000 of forged money into your Paypal account which you quickly transfered in your Fatshoe account, would you have $1000 of real money? If so, there's a scam that I just uncovered ;)

I just have one comment, in yo' face TheLoneGunman :D

Well at least he was thinking that his little kids probably needed dipers or food or something. Or he could be a crack addict and you just gave him $220 for his cause, probably enough to kill him.:P Well I learned something new today.

Sorry I was away for a few hours.

1. I am not a member of the State bar of California nor have I ever claimed to be.

2. MCD - interesting theory about the money, but incorrect. (If you had an apple and I gave you an apple that was damaged, then you would have 2 apples. If you then gave an apple to a friend [the good one], then you would have 1 apple left. If all bad apples were seized, then you would have nothing left, but your friend would still have 1. There is no "created" money. Passwird sent the guy $220 of his OWN money, not the transferred money. Therefore, he balance fell $460 ($220 he sent plus $240 he received) rather than a smaller amount.

3. Not that it will do much to get back your money, but report the guy to [email protected] so that they can at least suspend him from ebay and keep him from contacting others

4. PayPal just sent me an email talking about how they protect sellers from reversed charges and are better than the competition. Perhaps you can push the issue of this reversal with them harder

5. Not that it makes this any better, but this scam has been around for YEARS. If you remember the movie THE STING with Redford and Newman, they did it there. They took the packet of money and then pretended to wrap it up tight and give it to the guy. Only when he got home did he realize that he just had a big wad of newspapers not bills.

Bah to Apples, lets say Passwird had no money in either his Paypal or Fatshoe account.

So this guy sends Passwird $240. So now Passwirds balance is $240. Passwird transfers $220 of that money into his Fatshoe account so now his balances are as follows:
Paypal: $20
Fatshoe: $220

So he sends the guy $220 of the Fatshoe money. So now he has no money in Fatshoe and $20 in Paypal.

What I'm saying is that if Paypal is trying to retrieve $240 from Passwirds account, and he only has $20 in there, wouldn't Paypal need to reverse the FatShoe account to get the remaining $220 that has misterously dissapeared?

Now, see if Passwird had a lot of money in both accounts, then your reasoning works, which is pretty bad. Since I keep my PayPal balance at like $50 and upgrade when necissary..

Don't you have to be an adult to use PAY Pal and/or FAT SHOE? I don't know because I don't use either..but I would think you would have to agree to some kind of statement when you signed up saying you are an adult. What's the deal? Do they let minors create and use accounts?

Walgreens and Walmart are not the same (although neither seems enjoy a reputation as a good place to work). Several of Sam Walton's (the founder of Walmart) sons are in the top 10 richest men. The family that owns Walgreens (if they still do) is a really messed up bunch.

Unless of course there is like a walmart-like store named Nathan's that I don't know about.

I think you should contact Fatwallet again. Don't let it rest with "I'm sure the other guy will do something about it". They just want you to wait too long for them to do anything about it.
Make the Fatwallet reverse he charge. It is irresponsable of them to do this to you. Don't let it rest.

Don't let up on Fat Wallet. They are letting this guy get away with this scam. They need to be put into check. Call them and record the conversation.

are you allowed to record phone convos in cali?

TheLoneGunman
07-06-2001, 11:17 PM
He might be a minor, but chances are he kept bypassing (and agreeing by pressing the AGREE and similar keys) the warnings that he had to be at least 18 or otherwise able to enter into a contract.

Their response would be to argue fraud from the begining and take back all the incentives he ever received. (Chances are these will be over the $220 in question)

I am coming down harsh because I want to prepare you for their response.

It is one thing to rip off BMG or Columbia House by claiming you are a minor, but X.com (PayPal) has TEAMS of lawyers and investigators that are used solely to go after people like that.

Sucks that you got taken, but greed really was what tripped you up. If he did this for something other than financial gain (and there is no way to put this other than you wanted to make money off it) then you might get more sympathy.

Just be glad they aren't prosecuting you for money laundering (and you don't have to be 18 for that)

MrBehm

It says you have to be 16 (and I am not sure ***** was when he started his account) and also that if you are 16-18 you warrant that you are doing so under the supervision of your parents (which implies that they are co-signing for you)

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

The situation you have described is money laundering and is illegal. You are responsible for the funds entering your PayPal account. In order to retain the funds from a fraudulent payment that you received, PayPal must withhold funds from your PayPal account balance. However, the
funds currently in your PayPal account are insufficient to cover the full amount of fraudulent funds. We need the remaining $147.35 returned to your Paypal account.

Please send the necessary amount to us via check, money order, or by an electronic transfer to your PayPal account. If you are paying by check or money order, please make it payable to PayPal, and send it to: PayPal, P.O. Box 45950, Omaha, NE 68145. In the meantime, your account may be restricted if you are not a verified seller. Please note that the withholding of funds is in accordance with our

You could tell them you're a minor and that you entered into the contract illegally which would make your account non-eligible. Also you need to be 18 to get a credit card legally.

All of that said they'd come after your parents if you didn't cover what happened.

Sorry to hear what happened man. I've found that you always end a conversation that starts out about money.

yes, it may be money laundering, but the kid however old you are was completely oblivious to it. It would never hold up in court ever, i would seriously continue to hassle paypal. If you're under 18 they can't touch you.

Hey passwird, have you tried calling pay pal? These things are rarely resolved through e-mail. I called them and spoke to them about your case, what they said was:

The guy couldn't reverse the charges. What had happened is he probably filed a fraud report or something and paypal is investigating and in the meantime froze both accounts. The investigation can take up to 35 days.

I really suggest you give them a call, and talk to them. I spoke to Nicky at extension 4283. Call them up and ask exactly what happened. If you're not getting any help ask for the manager or something. And try to be nice. Don't yell or anything. Use the Dale Carnegie method :-)

If you guys don't know who Dale Carnegie is, check on amazon. He was teaching public speaking and stuff in the early 20 century. One of his books, a classic is How to Win Friends and Infuence people. I suggest you guys read it :-)

Good luck passwird.
